Islamabad: A high-level parliamentary delegation from Pakistan, led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party and former Foreign Minister, met with Philemon Yang, President of the General Assembly, to discuss escalating tensions in South Asia.
The meeting occurred against the backdrop of the Pahalgam incident, which has heightened hostilities in the region. Mr. Bhutto Zardari briefed Mr. Yang on the deteriorating security situation and expressed concern over India’s recent actions.
Mr. Bhutto Zardari criticized India’s accusations against Pakistan, made without credible investigation, and highlighted India’s military actions, which he described as violations of international law. He pointed to targeted strikes on civilians and the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty as particularly troubling.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s dedication to peace and regional stability, Mr. Bhutto Zardari called for a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in line with the UN Charter. He urged the international community to restore the Indus Water Treaty and facilitate dialogue between Pakistan and India.
The delegation warned of the humanitarian risks posed by disruptions to the Indus Water Treaty, highlighting the potential for water to become a tool of conflict. They stressed the importance of respecting treaty sanctity and preventing India’s actions from setting a dangerous precedent.
In response, Mr. Yang acknowledged Pakistan’s engagement with the UN and reiterated the importance of dialogue and diplomacy. He emphasized that maintaining adherence to the UN Charter and international law is crucial for achieving peace.
