Pakistan Rests Key Players Including Babar Azam in Strategic Selection Shift

Karachi: In a significant reshuffle of its Test squad, Pakistan has opted to rest several key players, including captain Babar Azam, for the remaining matches of the ongoing series against England. This decision follows Pakistan’s loss in the first Test in Multan, where England secured a record-setting victory.

According to International Cricket Council, the new selection committee, which announced changes on Sunday, stated that the move is part of a long-term strategy to manage player workload ahead of a busy cricket season. Assistant coach Azhar Mahmood emphasized that Babar Azam, along with bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, were not dropped but rested to allow them to recuperate before a demanding international schedule.

“Babar is our number one player, and the decision to give him a rest was strategic,” Mahmood explained. The Future Tours Programme (FTP) indicates a packed schedule for Pakistan, with tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa on the horizon. The management believes that resting key players now will enable them to return rejuvenated for these challenges.

The first Test saw England amass a daunting 823/7, significantly taxing Pakistan’s pace attack. Mahmood noted that both Naseem and Shaheen had heavy workloads during this match, and with the nature of upcoming pitches likely favoring spin, it presented an opportunity to rest the fast bowlers and explore more spin options.

The revised squad for the second and third Tests under new captain Shan Masood includes a blend of experienced players and newcomers, with Saud Shakeel as vice-captain. The team aims to leverage this mix in the face of challenging matches ahead.

Pakistan’s squad adjustments reflect a thoughtful approach to player health and strategic planning, recognizing the intense demands of international cricket on athletes.
