Pakistan Faces Urgent Climate Crisis After Torrential Rains Claim 81 Lives, Senator Rehman Urges Action

Karachi, Senator Sherry Rehman, Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party, called for immediate and decisive action following torrential rains that resulted in the deaths of 81 people across Pakistan, emphasizing the vulnerability of communities to extreme weather events.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Senator Rehman expressed deep sympathy for the families of those killed and stressed the broader implications of climate change that led to the catastrophic weather. She highlighted the extensive damage, including over 200 homes impacted in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir, underscoring the urgency of addressing both the causes and effects of global warming.

Senator Rehman pointed out Pakistan’s minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions at only 0.9%, yet the nation faces severe climate challenges. She emphasized the need for improved disaster management and infrastructure to cope with the consequences of climate change, including glacial lake outburst floods which threaten northern communities.

She concluded by calling for enhanced resilience and response strategies to protect vulnerable populations and mitigate the impacts of such disasters in the future.
