Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan's highest civil awards, on United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in recognition of his international service, leadership of the United Nations, and contributions to global peace and development.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the honor marks the first time a UN Secretary-General has received this award from Pakistan. The ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr was attended by prominent figures including Prime Minister Muhammed Shehbaz Sharif, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and members of the diplomatic corps.
During a meeting with Guterres, President Zardari commended his leadership and efforts in promoting international peace and addressing the concerns of developing countries. He reiterated Pakistan's support for Palestinian self-determination and emphasized the need for dialogue between Pakistan and India to resolve regional disputes, particularly regarding Jammu and Kashmir.
President Zardari also addressed issues related to the Indus Waters Treaty and regional diplomacy, underscoring Pakistan's commitment to peaceful dialogue and counter-terrorism efforts. He highlighted Pakistan's significant contributions to UN peacekeeping missions and supported UN reforms to benefit developing nations.
On climate change, he called for increased international action to support vulnerable countries like Pakistan. The President also appreciated Guterres's solidarity following the 2022 floods and efforts to mobilize international aid.
Guterres expressed gratitude for the award and acknowledged Pakistan's hospitality, resilience, and contributions to global efforts. The meeting was attended by UN officials including Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo and Resident Coordinator a.i. Pernille Ironside, alongside Pakistani leaders such as Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Senator Sherry Rehman.
