Islamabad: The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) marked the conclusion of the “COP in My City Pakistan 2024” event on August 29, 2024, at the SINES Auditorium, a significant initiative aimed at involving Pakistani youth in climate action and policymaking. The event signified the end of provincial-level competitions, setting the stage for the upcoming Grand Finale in October.
According to National University of Sciences and Technology, the event was part of a collaborative effort under the Climate Change for Youth Road Map of the Ministry of Climate Change, supported by partnerships with the NUST Placement Office (NPO), UNICEF, the Prime Minister’s Youth Program, and UN Women. The initiative has grown significantly since its inception in 2021, emphasizing the inclusion of young individuals from remote areas and promoting the active participation of young females in climate discourse.
The provincial competitions identified the most innovative and impactful climate solutions presented by youth across seven regions of Pakistan Federal, KPK, Punjab, AJK, Sindh, Balochistan, and GB. The winners from these competitions will advance to the Grand Finale, with the victors gaining the prestigious opportunity to represent Pakistan at the COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
His Excellency Mr. Khazar Farhadov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, who attended as the Chief Guest, praised the initiative for its vital role in empowering youth and promoting a cooperative approach to tackling climate change. The event served not only as a showcase for young environmentalists but also as a vital link for ongoing dialogue among youth, government officials, and climate change experts, ensuring that the voices of the younger generation are heard in policymaking circles.
