Karachi: Mike Hesson, the new coach for Pakistan’s white-ball cricket team, has outlined strategic initiatives to reintegrate key players Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi into the T20I squad. This move comes after both players were excluded from the lineup that recently dominated Bangladesh in a home series.
Hesson emphasized the importance of Babar and Shaheen in his plans for the upcoming T20 World Cup, set to take place in India and Sri Lanka next year. The duo is currently participating in a training camp in Karachi, preparing for a forthcoming series in Bangladesh.
Contrary to circulating rumors, Hesson clarified that Babar Azam is not being considered as a wicket-keeping option. Instead, Babar is competing with Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub for an opening batting position. Hesson noted the necessity for Babar to improve his strike rate, which currently lags behind his competitors.
Hesson expressed that addressing strike rates is crucial for Pakistan to enhance its T20 cricket standing globally. He highlighted recent adjustments made during the Bangladesh series to align with modern cricket’s demands, urging Babar to focus on these aspects for his reintegration into the squad.
Regarding Shaheen Afridi, Hesson refrained from disclosing specific areas for improvement but acknowledged the need for enhanced white-ball performance. He reiterated the coaching staff’s commitment to supporting players through performance fluctuations and ensuring they return stronger.
Hesson’s strategic focus underscores his intent to optimize Pakistan’s T20 cricket capabilities by refining the skills of seasoned players like Babar and Shaheen, ensuring their effective return to the international stage.
