Karachi Continues to Struggle with Escalating Garbage Crisis, Says PDP Chairman Altaf Shakoor

Karachi: The city of Karachi is facing a growing garbage disposal crisis, with billions spent annually yet failing to effectively manage the escalating waste problem, as per Pasban Democratic Party Chairman Altaf Shakoor. The situation has led to increased pollution and the threat of epidemics, prompting calls for judicial and governmental intervention.

According to Pasban Democratic Party, Shakoor criticized the Sindh government’s handling of the issue, particularly after the takeover of waste management duties from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation in 2016. He noted that despite the involvement of foreign contractors, notably Chinese firms, the city’s garbage disposal efforts have been largely ineffective. Shakoor cited the failure of cogen plants intended to convert waste to electricity and highlighted the risks of fire from accumulated garbage. He urged the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court to take suo moto notice of the matter to ensure public safety.

Shakoor emphasized that the responsibility also lies with citizens to maintain cleanliness and avoid contributing to the waste problem. He stressed the importance of governmental action to ensure regular and effective garbage collection, especially during the monsoon season when the risk of disease and environmental issues peak. The ongoing issues with waste management are exacerbating the city’s challenges with natural waterway blockages and turning local rivers into contaminated sites.
