Kampala: The Aga Khan University (AKU) in Uganda has marked a significant milestone with the dedication of its new Nakawa Campus, an event that brought religious leaders from various faiths together to explore the University’s impact. This gathering, which included Sheikh Muhammad Ali Wasswa, Reverend Emmanuel Kalagala, and Mr. Mukesh Shukra, highlighted the institution’s commitment to quality education and healthcare—a vision set forth by its Founding Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan IV, and continued by His Highness the Aga Khan V and Pro-Chancellor Princess Zahra Aga Khan.
The Nakawa Campus represents a pivotal step in AKU’s mission to advance education and healthcare in Uganda and the East African region. AKU President Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin stressed the campus’s potential to cultivate skilled professionals who will contribute to the nation’s growth. He acknowledged the importance of alumni, stating, “The real value of a university lies in its alumni.”
The campus is set to offer a new Bachelor of Nursing Science program and will eventually serve 700 students and employ 100 faculty and staff. A focal point of the campus will be the upcoming Aga Khan University Hospital, which aims to elevate healthcare standards in Uganda with international-quality care in multiple specialties.
The University expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Ugandan government for their support, as well as to the global community of donors and alumni for their ongoing contributions.
