Indus Hospital Hosts Seminar on Interstitial Lung Diseases, Emphasizes Multidisciplinary Approach

Karachi, 16 Oct 2023: To address the mounting concerns over the misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment of Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD), Indus Hospital’s Pulmonology Department held a comprehensive seminar on October 12, 2023. Gathering a panel of ten distinguished specialists, four from international domains, the seminar emphasized the importance of incorporating radiologists and other medical specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of ILD.

Prof Sohail Akhtar, who heads the Pulmonology Department at Indus Hospital, kickstarted the seminar with an insightful introduction, presenting two engaging ILD cases. A significant spotlight was cast on the “Pakistan ILD Registry” by Prof Ali Zubairi from Aga Khan University. His presentation delved into idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, the most prevalent form of ILD, and other related variants.

The seminar traversed a wide gamut of subjects pertinent to ILD. Dr. Kashif Shazlee highlighted the role of HRCT chest in diagnosing ILD, while Dr. Saleem Anwar from the UK guided attendees on individualized ILD case evaluations. Drawing from his vast experience, Dr. Imran Nizami from the USA presented on “Lung transplantation in ILD cases,” noting the positive outcomes from double lung transplantation.

Other presentations touched on topics like “Hypersensitivity pneumonitis” by Dr. Mosavir Ansarie, and “Sarcoidosis” and “connective tissue-related ILD” by Dr. Saleem Anwar and Dr. Saima Saeed respectively. Dr. Nazia Choudhury from Northern Ireland concluded the seminar with her expertise on “cystic and rare interstitial lung diseases.”

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) event, which garnered accreditation for five hours from Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), was well-attended by consultants and trainees from a range of medical specialties.
