Election Preparations Underway in Islamabad as Nomination Papers Filing Begins

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has commenced the process for local government elections in Islamabad, with the filing of nomination papers for general members of union councils beginning today. This marks the start of a series of electoral activities leading up to the polling day scheduled for February 15, 2026.

The election schedule, announced on December 9, has set the formal process in motion. Returning Officers (ROs) initiated the proceedings on December 19 by issuing a public notice inviting nominations from prospective candidates. This step has been pivotal in the lead-up to the elections, as candidates now have until December 27 to submit their papers.

Key dates in the schedule include a break on December 25 in observance of Quaid-e-Azam Day. Following the nomination period, ROs will publish the lists of candidates on December 29. The scrutiny of these nominations will take place from December 30 to January 3, 2026, ensuring the eligibility of those who wish to contest.

Further steps involve decisions on appeals and the publication of final candidate lists on January 16, 2026. Candidates will then engage in a 28-day campaign period before voters head to the polls.

Eligibility to contest as a general member requires candidates to be enrolled voters within their Union Council. The nomination papers must include signatures from a proposer, a seconder, and the candidate, along with declarations of assets and a PKR 2,000 fee.

Election officials comprise members from the ICT Administration and the Federal Directorate of Education. Deputy Commissioner Islamabad, Irfan Nawaz Memon, serves as the District Returning Officer, overseeing a team of 16 Returning Officers drawn from educational and administrative sectors.

This carefully orchestrated election process is a fundamental aspect of the democratic framework in Islamabad, ensuring representation at the local government level.
