Department of Computer Engineering holds multiple skill-based trainings

Lahore, May 16, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Computer Engineering conducted multiple 0.5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit point skill-based multiple trainings for the students at the University of Lahore (UOL) main Defence Road Campus in the month of March.

On March 7, 2022, a CPD training (0.5 points) on “Integration and Exploitation of Renewable and Wind Energy Sources in Smart Power System”. The training under the facilitation of Engr. Ihsan Ullah (Assistant Professor, Computer Engineering) targeted UOL’s Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) registered students and professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills. This training was arranged to familiarize the participants with the current status of large, grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy, its benefits, constraints to development, as well as strategies for mitigating negative impacts and overcoming barriers to investment.

During the training session, the participants were addressed on increasing complexity of the existing power grid due to rapid population growth, development in technology, infrastructure and computational tools. The speaker also discussed the factors that contribute to the need for the deployment of a smart grid for secure and efficient use of energy. The session discussed the availability of solar, wind energy and its usage, wind technology issues, the global status of PV and wind power generation and investment costs.

On March 10, 2022, Engr. Dr. Muhammad Wasim Nawaz (Assistant Professor, Computer Engineering addressed the use of machine learning (ML), image classification and neural networks in software development. This skill enhancement session on “Deep Neural Networks for Image Classification” aimed at updating the students on how deep learning algorithms can function in mimicking the human brain and how a computer system can identify and recognize different images.

“Inspired by the human vision system, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are created by researchers, which is a subfield of machine learning. ANNs are inspired by information processing and distributed communication nodes in biological nervous systems,” he explained.

In another skill-based training session about “Recent research trends in Wireless Communication” on March 15, 2022, Engr. Dr. Naveed Ur Rehman (Assistant Professor, Computer Engineering) informed PEC registered engineers, faculty and students about the evolution of mobile generation from 1G to 5G and beyond.

Furthermore, some research areas for 4G, 5G and 6G were discussed in detail such as OFDM, Massive MIMO, SM-MIMO, NOMA, compressive sensing applications in detection and signal processing, Artificial Intelligence in Wireless Communication, Resource Allocation and frequency reuse.
