Lahore: On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has issued a strong call for decisive action to protect journalists globally, especially in conflict zones like Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Gaza. He emphasized the critical need for urgent measures to prevent violence and ensure justice for victims of crimes against journalists.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Chairman Zardari’s statement from the Media Cell at Bilawal House underlined the importance of journalism as a fundamental pillar of democracy and a service to society. He expressed deep concern over the harassment and targeted killings of journalists, stating, “Intimidation and violence against journalists are undoubtedly direct attacks on freedom of expression and the public’s right to know.”

He highlighted the historical commitment of the PPP to press freedom, recalling the legacies of Pakistan’s first elected Prime Minister Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who staunchly defended press freedoms. He also mentioned President Asif Ali Zardari’s efforts in empowering the press despite facing significant challenges.

Chairman Bilawal reaffirmed the PPP’s dedication to continue fighting for a free press both in Pakistan and around the world, stressing that journalism free from fear is essential for the health of a democracy.
