Islamabad: Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, addressed the National Assembly, urging opposition parties to nominate representatives to the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms. According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the call highlights concerns over the opposition's current disengagement, which Bhutto argues weakens Parliament's capability to serve the public effectively.
Bhutto emphasized the importance of a powerful Parliament, stating that the government and opposition share responsibility in ensuring its efficacy. He criticized the opposition's absence from parliamentary committees, which he believes limits their ability to voice constituent concerns. Bhutto urged the Leader of the Opposition to direct their members to participate actively in parliamentary committees, particularly in the Electoral Reforms Committee, to address issues surrounding electoral rigging and strengthen the legislative body's role.
In his address, Bhutto also highlighted the geopolitical challenges Pakistan faces, calling for comprehensive briefings by key ministers on economic and security issues. He stressed the need for Parliament to be informed about global maritime disruptions, regional conflicts, and national security agreements, asserting that all members have a right to understand the challenges ahead.
Bhutto reiterated that while the Electoral Reforms Committee was established through their efforts, its success depends on the opposition's participation. He concluded by urging that without full engagement in security, economic, and other critical briefings, parliamentary sessions risk becoming ineffectual.
