Pakistan’s Public Debt Soars to Rs86.7 Trillion, PTI Sindh President Demands Transparency

KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh has voiced concerns over the country's escalating public debt, which has surged from Rs49.3 trillion in June 2022 to Rs86.7 trillion by June 2026, marking a 76 percent increase over four years.

According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Sheikh highlighted the pressing need for transparency in the utilization of borrowed funds and questioned the government's fiscal policy and future financial obligations. He emphasized the importance of understanding the strategy for meeting debt-servicing obligations and called for an explanation of the benefits derived from the loans.

Sheikh pointed to the State Bank of Pakistan's foreign exchange activities, claiming that $30 billion had been purchased from the interbank market in the past four years, with $12 billion allocated for interest payments. He urged for public disclosure of these figures and greater transparency in foreign exchange reserves and debt management.

Additionally, Sheikh challenged the government to clarify the economic performance since 2022, questioning the factors contributing to the economic difficulties over the past four years. He demanded detailed information about public debt, interest payments, and foreign exchange utilization to provide citizens with a clearer understanding of the national economy's state.
