Balancing Growth: Pakistan Confronts Population Surge and Resource Scarcity

Karachi: Pakistan faces a pressing challenge as it grapples with a rapidly growing population that outpaces the country’s available resources. With over 245 million people, the nation’s resources are stretched thin, demanding a strategic approach to population control and resource management.

According to Pak NGOs, despite reducing its population growth rate from 4.4% in 1981 to an average of 1.2% in 2016, Pakistan has seen a recent upsurge to 1.9%, which is significantly higher than the global average of 1.3%. This increase places further strain on the country’s already limited resources, necessitating immediate and effective measures to manage population growth.

The primary instruments for addressing population growth center around empowering households to make informed decisions about family size based on their resources. This includes access to healthcare, education, food, and entertainment. However, deep-seated cultural and religious beliefs often misinterpret family planning as un-Islamic, compounded by a general lack of quality education and awareness, particularly in rural and tribal areas.

To effectively counter these challenges, Pak NGOs advocate for a comprehensive strategy that combines education, community engagement, and state intervention. They suggest focusing on the household as the nucleus for change, promoting family planning through a blend of religious understanding and rational education. Furthermore, the state must play a critical role by providing essential social services and fostering economic opportunities to support a sustainable population size.

In essence, the long-term solution to Pakistan’s population and resource dilemma requires a concerted effort from both the state and households, supported by educational programs and effective family planning initiatives. Through a targeted and well-crafted approach, Pakistan aims to achieve a balance between its population growth and the available resources, ensuring a sustainable future for the coming generations.
