Karachi, January 05, 2023 (PPI-OT):On December 13th 2022, a ceremony was held to formalise the gift from the alumni of the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) Class of 1983, to the Aga Khan University (AKU). The ceremony was held under the tree planted in 1981, by the Chancellor His Highness the Aga Khan, invoking a great sense of fondness and nostalgia for the alumni.

Dr. Rozina Karmaliani, Dean SONAM signed the legal agreement on behalf of AKU, while the Class of 1983 was represented by Dr. Riffat Jan, alumna 1983, and currently Professor and Associate Dean, SONAM. The endowment from the very first graduating class of AKU has been established to support and benefit future students of nursing. It is a testament to the truly exceptional group of alumni who have come together to give nursing students the same opportunities that were presented to them.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has been a leader in advancing nursing training, educating students from within Pakistan and beyond, transforming lives and shaping careers. Nearly 90% of students at SONAM are able to study free of cost, thanks to the generosity of donors and the financial assistance options available at AKU.

The endowment gift from the Class of 1983 will be invested, and scholarship will be granted each year, thus creating a lasting legacy for the alumni, while providing critical support to deserving students. Impact of the gift will continue in perpetuity and will open doors for future generations of nurses, preparing them for a life of service, leadership and impact.
