LEEDS: An impressive bowling performance by Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue has put England in a commanding position against Pakistan on the opening day of the Test match at Headingley. Both bowlers achieved five-wicket hauls, dismissing Pakistan for 171, and England responded by reaching 112/2 at stumps.
According to International Cricket Council, this marks the first time since 2006 that two England bowlers have secured five-wicket hauls in the same innings. Robinson and Tongue celebrated the achievement by deciding to share the cricket ball used during their remarkable spells. Robinson, who recently became a father for the second time, expressed that the day’s success held special significance for him.
Pakistan struggled with the bat, missing their regular captain Babar Azam. Despite the early loss of Azan Awais, Abdullah Shafique's 61 and Imam-ul-Haq's 42 provided some resistance. Shafique remains optimistic about Pakistan's chances, emphasizing the importance of early wickets on the second day to regain momentum.
England's innings saw contributions from Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay before they were dismissed by Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali. However, captain Joe Root and Jordan Cox stabilized the innings with a solid partnership, leaving England trailing by 59 runs in the first innings.
The series will continue with the second Test scheduled at Lord’s from August 27-31, followed by the third Test at Edgbaston from September 9-13.
