Karachi: A new Urdu language learning console named Dibi is set to transform how children in Pakistan engage with the language. Developed by Haya Imtiaz as her thesis project at Habib University in Karachi, Dibi is designed for children aged 5 to 9. The project emerged from Imtiaz’s personal journey of learning Urdu, inspired by her experiences in a mandatory university course.
Dibi employs a play-based approach to language learning, combining tactile controls with a connected screen. The console includes a game pack called Huruf Abad, featuring five original games tailored to develop spelling, vocabulary, sound recognition, grammar, and sentence structure. These games integrate cultural elements with modern visuals to create an engaging learning experience.
The development of Dibi was a collaborative effort. Imtiaz worked with Habib University developers to code the games using Unity, and a teammate helped prototype the console with Arduino. The project also involved feedback from family, classmates, and usability testing with parents and children.
Despite a delay due to regional political tensions, the thesis showcase event highlighted the potential of Dibi to enhance Urdu literacy. The project received positive feedback from children, professors, and even the university president, underscoring its impact beyond academia.
As Imtiaz graduates from the Communication and Design program, she envisions Dibi as a tool to improve Urdu literacy across Pakistan. Her project reflects a deep connection to her cultural roots and a commitment to making language learning accessible and enjoyable for future generations.
