Karachi: The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has rescinded its notification on the commercialization of amenity plots in Karachi, following a legal battle spearheaded by the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) and other parties.
PDP Chairman Altaf Shakoor expressed concerns about the impact of further commercialization on the city’s infrastructure, stating it would lead to a civic disaster given the current limitations. He emphasized the need for the government to plan new commercial estates and industrial districts, as the inner areas of Karachi are already densely populated.
Shakoor called for accountability of SBCA officers involved in the issuance of the controversial notification. He suggested assessing the assets of these officers to investigate potential corruption.
He further urged for a nationwide fight against corruption, drawing parallels to the country’s military campaigns. Shakoor referenced the Chief of Army Staff’s commitment to transforming Pakistan into a ‘hard state’ and stressed that eliminating corruption is crucial to achieving this goal.
In a gesture of gratitude, Shakoor acknowledged the contributions of all parties and stakeholders who participated in the legal challenge against the SBCA. He highlighted the importance of unity among Karachi’s stakeholders to develop the city into a modern, livable metropolis.
