Pasban Party Urges Army Chief to Advocate for Aafia Siddiqui’s Release

KARACHI: Altaf Shakoor, Chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the Chief of Army Staff, General Syed Asim Munir, to facilitate the early release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. Shakoor emphasized the humanitarian aspect of Siddiqui’s case and the potential diplomatic benefits of her release.

According to a statement by Pasban Democratic Party, over one million individuals have already signed a petition seeking clemency for Dr. Siddiqui. Shakoor highlighted the tradition of outgoing U.S. Presidents exercising their right to pardon prisoners and urged that President Joe Biden be approached before his term concludes.

Shakoor noted that both General Munir and Dr. Siddiqui share the distinction of being Hafiz-e-Quran, suggesting that Munir’s intervention could be a significant achievement in his military career. He appealed to Munir to use his influence to help secure Siddiqui’s release, citing Pakistan’s contributions to U.S. interests in the region, particularly in Afghanistan.

Releasing Dr. Siddiqui, Shakoor argued, would reinforce a sense of security among Pakistani citizens, particularly women. He described Dr. Siddiqui as a prominent scientist and educator, whose release could strengthen U.S.-Pakistan relations.

Shakoor expressed confidence in the Pakistani nation’s support for General Munir’s efforts against external and internal threats. He urged that action be taken swiftly in advocating for Dr. Siddiqui before the next U.S. administration assumes office.
