Islamabad: Secretary General of the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians, Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, has urged for electoral reforms and a responsible role for the opposition within parliamentary committees. He emphasized the importance of a strong state, constitutional supremacy, and adherence to democratic parliamentary traditions, key tenets believed by his party.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Bukhari highlighted the party's historical contribution to providing a Constitution and stressed the need for opposition representation in the parliamentary committee for electoral reforms, as advocated by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He drew attention to the effective opposition role played by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, even with limited seats, and argued for the essential nature of parliamentary committees in the legislative process. Bukhari criticized the demand for equal representation in committees, describing it as inconsistent with the law, and called for the opposition’s return to parliamentary committees to fulfill its role.
Bukhari noted the absence of legislation for electoral law reforms despite the passage of two and a half years. He emphasized the necessity of implementing reforms in electoral laws to reduce post-election allegations and disputes, and stated that including the opposition would bolster the legislative process. He also urged for an abandonment of the "I will not accept" attitude in parliament, advocating for a constructive dialogue between the Leader of the Opposition and the Prime Minister regarding appointments to the Election Commission. Furthermore, Bukhari condemned the use of inappropriate language, stating it undermines parliamentary norms and democratic discourse.
