Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari addressed the National Minorities’ Day ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Monday, emphasizing Pakistan’s dedication to protecting minority rights and enhancing their opportunities in accordance with the nation’s Constitution.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari highlighted the constitutional guarantees for minorities and the government’s efforts to increase job quotas and opportunities for them in various sectors. He underscored the observance of Minorities’ Day as a recognition of the diverse communities’ contributions to the country’s progress and their role as equal citizens and nation-builders.
The ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, saw participation from a wide range of dignitaries, including parliament members, religious leaders, diplomats, and media, as well as representatives from various minority communities. The attendees discussed the significance of unity, brotherhood, and religious tolerance inspired by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision.
In his address, President Zardari also contrasted the situation of minorities in Pakistan with those in neighboring India, criticizing the current policies under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and recalling the foresight of Jinnah in predicting the challenges minorities might face there.
The event also addressed global issues, with President Zardari commenting on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the violence affecting all communities.
Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, along with leaders from the Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Bahai, and Parsi communities, spoke at the event, praising the government’s efforts in upholding the rights and welfare of minorities. They reiterated the importance of spreading messages of peace and brotherhood globally, drawing from both constitutional and Islamic teachings that advocate for minority rights.
