Neurologist Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui Calls for Heightened Focus on Mental Health in Pakistan

Karachi: Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, a prominent neurophysician from Aga Khan University Hospital and President of the Epilepsy Foundation Pakistan, has called for increased attention from both the government and society to combat the rising incidence of mental illnesses in Pakistan. Marking the 22nd July World Brain Day, Dr. Siddiqui emphasized the complexity of the human brain and the critical need for awareness and timely treatment of brain diseases to ensure a healthier society.

According to The Aga Khan University, Dr. Siddiqui highlighted the diverse symptoms associated with different brain diseases and urged the public to consult neurologists or psychiatrists at the earliest signs of issues. She advocated for enhanced governmental and societal efforts in raising awareness about these conditions. This push aligns with the objectives of the World Federation of Neurology, which celebrates World Brain Day annually on July 22 to foster awareness and promote brain health globally.

The 2024 theme for World Brain Day focuses on brain health and prevention, in line with the World Health Organization’s brain health initiatives and the Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders. The day aims to emphasize the importance of preventive measures and proactive care in reducing the burden of neurological diseases, which are now the leading cause of disability worldwide. Events and activities on this day are designed to advance global cooperation and advocacy for better brain health.
