2nd International Conference on “Hydrology and Water Resources”

Lahore, April 04, 2022 (PPI-OT):The conference emphasis the need to enhance the efforts to make groundwater resources more visible. Centre of excellence in Water Resources Engineering, University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore organized the 2nd International Conference on “Hydrology and Water Resources”. Participants from various countries, including Hungary, Australia, Turkey, and China, as well as Pakistanis, attended the conference. The conference was inaugurated and welcomed by Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore.

While emphasizing the theme of the conference and theme of World Water Day, 2022 (Groundwater_ Making the invisible Visible), Vice-Chancellor indicated the need to put a spotlight on the invisible resource, enhance knowledge exchange and collaboration and thereby increase the awareness of the importance of taking care of our water resources and come up with agenda for future research and action.

As keynote speakers, Dr. Mohsin Hafeez (Country Representative, IWMI, Pakistan), Mr. Peter Kovacs (Water Director Hungary), Dr. Shahbaz Khan (UNESCO), Dr. Ghulam Nabi (CEWRE), Dr. Khurram Shahzad (ISP, Multan), and Dr. Atiq ur Rehman Tariq (Australia) highlighted the importance of climate resilience systems, the Water-Energy-Food nexus, investment in groundwater, and integrated water resource management.

Twenty-two technical papers were presented in three technical sessions, with the main focus on groundwater modeling, climate change, hydrological modelling and forecasting, snow and glacier impact assessment, water productivity and river regime variation. The active participation included representatives from NUST Islamabad, UET Taxila, UET Lahore, UAF Faisalabad, QCET Sahiwal, BZU Multan, University of Sialkot, UET Peshawar, Arid University Rawalpindi, HITEC Taxila, Islamic university Bahawalpur, WAPDA, PEC, China Three Gorgeous University, and from Punjab University along with Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering.

In the concluding session, Prof. Dr. Noor Muhammad Khan, Director, Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering, expressed gratitude to the conference’s organizing team, particularly Dr. Kaleem Sarwar, Dr. Ijaz Ahmad, Dr. Muhammad Waseem, Engr. Faraz ul Haq, and Engr. Awais Zafar, and stated that CEWRE will continue its efforts to train water managers and researchers in the field of water resources through classroom teaching and learning in addition to seminar and conferences.
