Launching Ceremony of Book Titled “English Language Teaching in Pakistan: Theory, Research and Pedagogy” at UE Bank Road Campus

Lahore, November 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):The launching ceremony of the book titled “English Language Teaching in Pakistan: Theory, Research and Pedagogy was held at Bank Road Campus of University of Education, Lahore on November 17, 2022. The event was presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha (S.I.) while Chairman Chief Minister Task Force on Education and former Education Minister Mian Imran Masood was the chief guest.

The program was hosted by Bank Road Campus Principal Professor Dr. Samina Mazhar, while the local and foreign speakers included Dr. Christine Coombe, Dr. Naziha Ali, Dr. Muhammad Islam, Dr. Muhammad Kamal Khan, Dr. Humaira Irfan, Dr. Tayyaba Tamim, Dr. Zahida Mansoor, Dr. Asma Shahid Kazi, Professor Dr. Tariq Rehman and others.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha (S.I) said that the distance from the English language can be the biggest obstacle in the way of development because this language is rich in all kinds of inventions, innovations, modern technology and science.

Therefore, we can safely say that proficiency in English language and teaching has become indispensable. He said that I hope that the said book will prove to be a masterpiece in terms of teaching and learning in English language, for which the efforts of the editors and the author of the book are commendable.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest, Chairman Chief Minister Task Force on Education Mian Imran Masood said that the negative attitude found in our society at a limited level towards the English language is condemnable.

Today about one and a half to two billion people of the world speak and understand English language because they are aware the importance of it. So, I congratulate the author, editors and publisher on the publication of this book. A large number of students including academicians, intellectuals, and scholars were also present on this occasion.

Second Academic Council meeting of University of Chitral 

Chitral, November 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):Approval to start MPhil programs in various disciplines

The second Academic council meeting of the University of Chitral was held on 16 November 2022 in the conference hall of the University of Chitral. In the beginning, the Vice-Chancellor informed the members about the ongoing development works in the university.

The meeting was chaired by the Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Zahir Shah and was attended by the Heads of All Departments of the University of Chitral. Members of the Academic Council from Upper and Lower Chitral also participated in the meeting.

Apart from the approval to start MPhil programs in various departments of the university, proposals were made regarding M.Phil. Regulation, Examination Policy, Admission Policy, Semester Rules, and the launch of various new degree programs. The Academic Council approved all the recommendations in the end.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zahir Shah thanked all the members and expressed the hope that every member will contribute to the academic development of the university in the future as well.

Another Call for Entries; Forest Protection Research Poster Competition dated 7th December 2022 

Chitral, November 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):Posters are attractive, punchy, clear, and effective not only at sharing data but at making an argument. For many students, posters will be their first opportunity to present their work. It is a way for them to share with each other their interesting and valuable work.

Therefore, the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Commercialization, and University of Chitral has launched the call for entries for the Forest Protection Research Poster Competition and the call for entries closes on 22nd November 2022. The competition is open to all students and faculty members at the University of Chitral.

Posters will be displayed in an exhibition at the Lawn of Main Hall, University of Chitral, with an in-person judging session, on 07th December 2022. The competition will be held from 11:00 am to 03:00 PM for the comments of judges and will conclude with the prize competition.

It is open to all the graduate and undergraduate students of the University of Chitral.

1st winner: Rs. 5000/-

2nd winner: Rs. 3000/-

3rd winner: Rs. 2000/-

The aim of this competition is to encourage the students to share their research findings and find inspiration beyond the areas of specific research interest. Moreover, it also aims to promote research and innovation among the students of the University of Chitral.

At whatever stage in the research process you are, do take this opportunity to share your work with others and gain valuable feedback. Researchers will be responsible for copyrights.

NUMS department of public health organized field visit for BSPH students to RHC Bagga Sheikhan, Rawalpindi 

Rawalpindi, November 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):NUMS Department of public health arranges multiple learning opportunities for the students of Bachelors of Public Health to have clear understanding of practical aspect of Public Health. A field visit was organized for the students as part of the Community Oriented Medical Education to Rural health Centre (RHC) Bagga Sheikhan Rawalpindi on 7th October from 0900 to 1400 hrs.

The objective of the visit was to orient students regarding health care delivery system network and its functioning. Another objective was to explain the general organizational structure and functioning of the Rural health Centers.

The Rural Health Center (RHC) is intended to increase access to primary care services for patients in rural communities. The RHC provides promotive, preventive, curative, diagnostics, inpatient services, medico-legal, dental, referral and ambulance services with 10-20 inpatients beds capacity over a catchment population of up to 100000 people.

Pre visit briefing facilitated by Huzaifa Akram (Asst. Prof Public Health) was given a day before the visit for the students about the functioning of RHC. Field training Performa comprising of different sections (Objectives, Activity Profile, human resource, supplies, services and HMIS) were also given to them to be filled during visit.

All three batches of BSPH students accompanied by Dr Tamkeen Jaffrey (Assoc. Prof), Dr Hina Shan (Asst. Prof), Huzaifa Akram (Asst. Prof) and Ms Rubab (Asst. Manager) from the department of Public Health were given a tour of the premises.

An initial briefing was delivered to students by Senior Medical Officer about responsibilities and health services provided by RHC. The students visited every section of the Rural Health Center and observed the different aspects of health care service delivery to the patients.

Then students in the form of groups were given demonstration about functioning and working of different stations of RHC (emergency room, T.B dots facilitator room, population welfare centre, EPI room, homeopathic clinic, dispensary, laboratory, labour room and Operation Theatre).

Students got the opportunity to observe and understand the practical aspect of rural health Centers and hence the primary health care system in Pakistan. They observed services being provided by RHC include medical check-up of patients, immediate Trauma management, Surgical procedures, Medico legal case report, Antenatal check-up, Laboratory tests (anemia, malaria, pregnancy test, urine test for sugar and protein), Normal delivery, Family planning services, EPI vaccination, Immunization (TT), TB treatment (TB dots programme), Growth monitoring and Nutrition Counselling.

The Head of Department Public Health Prof. Dr Uzma Hassan congratulated and appreciated the team of Department of Public Health on their hard work and commendable job for the smooth conduction of such a significant field visit. The HoD stressed on the importance of field visit for students as it encourages them to be more productive and efficient.

Green youth movement tree plantation drive

Rawalpindi, November 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):Planet Earth has been a provider for habitants since its creation. Unfortunately, detrimental practices of human beings have damaged the planet and its atmosphere in all ways. We need to take initiatives for protection and conservation of the atmosphere. NUMS emphasizes the importance of environmentally friendly activities being carried out either inside or outside the campus.

NUMS Environment committee is actively working for the improvement of solid waste management in the campus. Under the Prime Minister’s youth program, HEC Led initiative of GYM clubs across country, NUMS has its Green Youth Movement club functioning to its fullest potential.

The student body of the GYM Club consisting of Captain, Vice-Captain, two thematic leads and a communication lead make it sure that the management of solid waste is done appropriately in the campus. Moreover, they often carry out awareness programs for the upcoming student batches and encourage them to take part in the activities carried out by the NUMS Gym club.

In this regard, NUMS GYM Club concluded its first Tree Plantation drive successfully at Naval Anchorage Islamabad. Under the kind guidance and leadership of Professor Dr. Azam Chaudhary, Dean faculty of SSH and focal person NUMS GYM Club, member Oversight committee and lecturer Department of Psychology Mr. Umar Fayyaz led the team of faculty and students from various departments for this noble cause.

Tree Plantation Team included faculty members Dr. Aman Karim, Associate professor from Department of Biological Sciences and Ms. Misbah Obaid, Lecturer, Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

Members of management staff included Mr. Salman Haider and Mr. Mujhtaba who facilitated during the event while all the administrative tasks at the back end were managed by Mr. Haseeb Baig who played a pivotal role in execution of the task.

All the students from Department of Psychology, Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Public Health and Department of Nutrition and Diatec’s participated enthusiastically for the tree plantation activity.

On Oct 28, 2022, more than 40 students from all departments participated and over 300 trees were planted across three different venues in Naval Anchorage, Islamabad. Besides plantation, awareness campaign was also run to make residents aware regarding caring behaviour towards trees and cleanliness of environment.

The administration officer of Naval Anchorage Lieutenant Commander Mohsin joined the team to endorse this activity planned and conducted by NUMS GYM club and eagerly extended his interest and collaboration for the future projects.

The important meeting of the admission committee under the chairmanship of the vice chancellor of the University of Sindh, for the academic year 2023, a passing score of 30% was set for the admissions in the bachelor degree programs, a total of 17077 candidates were eligible for the admissions 

Jamshoro, November 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):The important meeting of the admission committee of the University of Sindh Jamshoro was held in the Senate Hall under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Professor (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro, in which a passing score of 30% has been set for admissions in bachelor degree programs for the academic year 2023.

A total of 17077 candidates have qualified for admission in more than 70 academic departments of Sindh University. While 11 from Hyderabad, 4 from Badin, 2-2 from Qamber-Shahdadkot and Matari, one candidate from Dadu, Mirpurkhas, Tando Al-Hiyar, Shaheed Benazirabad and Sajawal have secured 80 or more marks. No candidate from Karachi, Punjab, Balochistan, KPK and Gilgit-Baltistan could secure 80 marks. Except for one candidate from other provinces, no one got even 70% marks.

Hyderabad district topped all the other districts of the province in the entrance test scores. In the admission committee meeting, Sindh University Testing Center Director Dr. Aftab Chandio gave a detailed briefing about the results of the pre-entry test held on October 30 and November 6. He said that a total of 20,787 candidates submitted their forms for admission to bachelor’s degree programs, while a total of 19,348 candidates participated in both stages of the entrance test.

He said that if 30% score is set for admission, 17077 candidates will be eligible for admission, while 18639 candidates will be eligible for admission is 25% score is set and 19180 candidates will be eligible for admission is 20% score is set. Dr. Aftab Chandio further said that the candidates who got the best marks in both phases of the test belong to Hyderabad district, from which 11 candidates got 80% or above marks in the test.

116 candidates scored 70%, 536 candidates scored 60%, 1330 candidates scored 50%, 2411 candidates scored 40%, 2889 candidates scored 35% and 3224 candidates scored 30%. Badin district stood second, 4 students got 80 percent, 30 candidates got 70 percent, 141 candidates got 60 percent, 412 candidates got 50 percent, 769 candidates got 40 percent and 1105 candidates got 30 percent marks.

He said that two candidates from Qamber-Shahdadkot and Matari were successful in securing 80% or more marks. He said that one candidate from Dadu, Mirpurkhas, Tando Elhiar, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sajawal got 80% marks.

Dr. Chandio said that 18 of Mirpurkhas, 28 of Jamshori, 14 of Sanghar, 19 of Tharparkar, 20 of Matari, 5 of Naushera Feroze, 13 of Larkana, 14 of Tandi Elhiar, 5 of Umarkot, Qambar- 9-9 from Shahdadkot and Khairpur Mirs, 4-4 from Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur and Sajawal, 3-3 from Ghotki and Kashmore, 13 from Tandi Muhammad Khan, 2 from Jacobabad and 8 from Thatta have passed. No candidate from Shikarpur could get 70% marks. He said that Hyderabad stood first in 30% marks.

322 candidates from here got 30% marks. Similarly, 1652 of Dadu, 1196 of Mirpurkhas, 1105 of Badin, 1001 of Jamshori, 1033 of Sanghar, 721 of Tharparkar, 711 of Mattari, 878 of Nowshero Feroze, 770 of Larkana, 630 of Tandi Elhiar, 613 of Umarkot, Qambar-Shahdadkot.

528, 550 from Khairpur Mirs, 461 from Shaheed Benazir Aba, 381 from Ghotki, 342 from Tandi Muhammad Khan, 210 from Jacobabad, 208 from Thatta, 210 from Shikarpur, 186 from Kashmore, 197 from Sukkur and 119 from Sajawal. Percentage marks obtained. He said that a total of 99 candidates from Karachi got 30% marks, while there is no candidate from the provincial capital city among the 80% and 70% school scorers.

According to Dr. Aftab Chandio, a total of 99 candidates from Punjab, KPK, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan could get 30% marks, while not a single candidate is included in 80% marks. Only one candidate could score 70%, 3 candidates scored 60%, 22 candidates scored 50%, 61 candidates scored 40%, 80 candidates scored 35%, 90 candidates scored 33% and 105-105 candidates scored 20 and 25%.
