FCCU’s Centre for Public Policy and Governance and Civil Services Academy Launches Policy Brief Series

Lahore, May 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):On Thursday, May 19, 2022 the Centre for Public Policy and Governance at Forman Christian College Lahore (FCCU) and The Civil Services Academy (CSA), Pakistan Administrative Service Campus launched three Policy Briefs under their continuing collaboration on developing a research course module for the CSA’s Mid Career Management Course.

Mr. Omer Rasool, Director General CSA, and his colleagues including Additional Directors Mr. Muhammad Bilal Akram and Ms. Ammara Khattak spearheaded the collaboration. The CPPG faculty was lead by Founding Director CPPG, Dr. Saeed Shafqat and his team including Mr. Raheem ul Haque, Dr. Rabia Chaudhry and Ms. Saba Shahid.

During the launch event Mr. Rasool explained that the aim of the module for the 3rd Specialized Component of the 32nd Mid Career Management Course was to provide the officers with an understanding of evidence-based policy making through a practical approach to data collection, analysis, policy critique and research writing. The public sector must develop out-of-the-box solutions in order to address real-life public policy challenges and this will come from constant engagement with data, evidence and on-ground realities.

Dr. Shafqat spoke about the need for sustained communication and collaboration between academia and the bureaucracy, which is necessary for policy-making to remain relevant, up-to-date and responsive. The end product of the module was the publication of a policy document authored by the MCMC officers under the CPPG faculty.

Each policy brief highlights a particular development challenge under the theme of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and provides policy recommendations in the form of actionable solutions that reflect the experiences of CPPG Faculty and the PAS Campus. The three Policy Briefs launched today are titled Good Health and Well Being: Achieving Sustainable Development Through Adaptive Public Healthcare Policies; Sustainability of Lahore: How can the city meet its SDG 11 targets? and Street Vending: Secure Livelihoods and Sustainable Cities.

Dr. Jonathan Addleton, Rector FCCU gave the closing remarks to the launch event and highlighted CPPG’s continued efforts in the domain of informing decision-makers. The Centre has successfully completed a number of collaborative projects in the domain of local government empowerment, migration and urbanization, social welfare, public health and digital governance. This is part of FCCU’s commitment to give-back to the community and work towards creating an environment of open discussion and debate.

Dr. Amjad Saqib, Founder and Executive Director Akhuwat Foundation, was the Chief Guest and concluded the event by appreciating the engagement between academics and civil servants – an important activity in the realm of governance. He added that civil society organizations must also be involved in such dialogues and deliberations, as should the output of these events, including Policy Briefs, be able to reach the masses through Urdu translations of these publications. This is important for participatory development processes. Students, faculty members, government officials and civil service trainers were all present at the launch ceremony.

Islamabad Alumni Community Reunites

Islamabad, May 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):In what was a true reunion, in every sense of the word, the Islamabad and KPK alumni community came together on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at The Monal Restaurant, Islamabad for their annual Islamabad and KPK Alumni Reunion.

After more than a while away from physical meet-ups, the alumni were buzzing with excitement to finally have an opportunity to reconnect. Not only was the reunion a chance for the community to get together again in-person, but also to engage and interact with leadership from their alma mater as Mr. Shahid Hussain, Rector, Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, and Director of Advancement, Ms. Nuzhat Kamran, were all in attendance at the event.

Reunions are a one-of-a-kind occasion for alumni to reflect, catch up, and celebrate, and that is just what this get-together was for one of the largest LUMS alumni communities. Hosted by the Office of Advancement, the evening opened with a video on the University’s 35-Year anniversary this past year, reflecting on the incredible LUMS journey.

This was followed by an overview of the newest directions that University is taking by Ms. Kamran, who shared the latest updates from Advancement at LUMS, and encouraged the alumni to stay engaged with their alma mater, seek out opportunities that will bring together the larger LUMS community and also enhance the University’s growth.

In this effort, she also acknowledged the patronage of two Islamabad alumni ambassadors, Mr. Haider Rafique (MBA 1994) for his continuous support in helping LUMS build external partnerships, and Mr. Luqman Afzal (BSc 2002) for his generosity in hosting the reunion at his beautiful restaurant, Monal.

Representatives from the Islamabad Alumni Working Group and KPK Alumni Chapter, namely Mr. Saud Mukhtar (MBA 2007) and Mr. Sarmad Khan (MBA 2000) respectively, also took to the floor and briefly shared their hopes and plans for the alumni community’s activities and engagement in the coming months.

The alumni also had the chance to hear from Dr. Ahmad, who expressed his happiness at the fantastic turnout of over 150 alumni and encouraged the alumni to stay involved with all the new happenings at LUMS. Mr. Hussain thanked the alumni for their enduring connection with LUMS and wished them great success in their future endeavours.

With the anticipation of meeting old friends after a significant gap, the reunion was a wonderful opportunity for the alumni to reminisce over a delicious dinner. The evening’s celebrations also included snippets of the alumni sharing why they stay engaged with LUMS, including a short live singing performance by a musically talented alumnus.

A reunion as engaging and exciting as this one would not have been possible without the enthusiastic participation of the alumni, who left with bags of LUMS memorabilia as souvenirs and an optimistic determination to engage through many more such events in the future.
