Karachi: Pakistan is experiencing a significant rise in heart and other diseases, with lifestyle choices contributing to the development of these conditions in younger generations. Medical experts are urging parents to discourage the increasing trend of fast food consumption among children.
According to the Aga Khan University, these views were expressed by medical experts during a medical camp organized in collaboration with Aga Khan University Hospital at the Karachi Press Club. The camp was attended by various officials, including Karachi Press Club President Fazil Jameeli, Secretary Muhammad Aslam Khan, senior journalists, and members of the Health Committee. Representatives from Aga Khan University Hospital, including Dr. Javaid A. Khan, Professor of Pulmonology, and Dr. Yawer Saeed, Assistant Professor of Cardiology, also participated. The event featured medical tests such as echocardiograms and ECGs.
Karachi Press Club Secretary Muhammad Aslam Khan commended Aga Khan University Hospital for organizing the camp, acknowledging the increasing unaffordability of private healthcare. He expressed gratitude towards Aga Khan University Hospital and its Communications Department for providing healthcare services to press club members.
Dr. Javaid A. Khan highlighted the importance of physical activity, a balanced diet, and a healthy lifestyle in preventing cardiovascular diseases. He urged parents to reduce fast food consumption among children and promote the intake of vegetables and nutritious foods. Dr. Khan also emphasized the necessity of lifestyle changes, including regular physical activity and avoiding tobacco use to reduce health risks.
Dr. Yawer Saeed noted that cardiovascular diseases are becoming epidemic in Pakistan and across Asia, with a noticeable increase in heart attack cases among younger individuals over the past decade. He advised dietary moderation and the adoption of a balanced and nutritious diet to help decrease the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases through positive lifestyle changes.
