Lahore: The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore has enforced a complete ban on harmful plastic and styrofoam products to address environmental pollution and encourage eco-friendly practices. This action supports the Government of Punjab’s “Plastic-Free Punjab Pledge” and the province-wide ban on plastic bags thinner than 75 microns.
A notification from the university administration outlined the prohibition of styrofoam plates, boxes, and cups, plastic bags under 75 microns, and other substandard disposable plastics within the university. The directive aims to mitigate the environmental impacts of non-biodegradable materials, which release hazardous chemicals when used with hot or oily foods.
The university has instructed food service and retail outlets across all campuses to transition to environmentally safe alternatives. Approved substitutes include biodegradable bags of at least 75 microns, cardboard boxes, and glass cups and plates. However, due to hygiene concerns linked to inadequate cleaning, stainless steel and reusable glass utensils will continue to be banned.
Vendors, contractors, cafeterias, canteens, and shops on campus have been ordered to adhere strictly to these new regulations. The university emphasized that any violations will incur substantial fines and legal consequences starting December 29, 2025.
