Turbat: A seminar titled “The Importance and Challenges of the Karez System in District Kech” was recently held at the University of Turbat. Organized by the university’s Department of Natural and Basic Sciences and Science Club, in collaboration with the International Institute of Social Studies at Erasmus University, the event highlighted the challenges facing the ancient Karez irrigation system and explored potential pathways for its revival.
The seminar was attended by numerous faculty members, administrative staff, and students. Prof. Dr. Gul Hasan, Vice Chancellor of Turbat University, served as the chief guest, while the seminar was moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Haneef-ur-Rahman.
The event commenced with the screening of “Forgotten Flows of Karez,” an internationally recognized documentary directed by Mir Abdul Malik. The film, produced by Hammal Aslam and Bohair Baloch, detailed the historical significance and decline of the Karez irrigation system.
A panel discussion followed the screening, featuring key figures like Prof. Dr. Gul Hasan, Hammal Aslam, Dr. Shabir Ahmed, Hafeezullah, and Ajmeri Lal. The panelists discussed the socio-economic value of the Karez, its traditional management, and its role in the region’s cultural identity.
Participants noted that climate change, the spread of tube wells, and long-term neglect have led to the deterioration of the Karez systems in District Kech. Discussions centered on the roles of community, government, and social organizations in maintaining and restoring the system.
The seminar concluded with remarks from Prof. Dr. Gul Hasan, who praised the event’s organizers and participants. He suggested the organization of a national conference to develop an action plan for reviving this environmentally friendly irrigation system.
