International Conference on Chemical Engineering at UET Lahore and Punjab University 

Lahore, March 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pakistan Institute of Chemical Engineers organized a 2-day International Conference on Chemical Engineering (ICCE-2022). The opening ceremony and the 1st day of the Conference was hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering, UET Lahore whereas the 2nd day of the Conference and the closing ceremony was hosted by the Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University of the Punjab. The event was opened by Prof. Dr. Naveed Ramzan, General Secretary PIChE, with an overview of the services of PIChE for the Chemical Engineering profession.

He told that 42 research presentations were delivered from industry and academia from all over Pakistan. Prof. Dr. Saima Yasin, Chairperson of the Department of Chemical Engineering, UET Lahore, and President American Society of Woman Engineers-Punjab Affiliate shared the Department’s achievements and contributions in uplifting the Chemical Engineering education in Pakistan and role of women in engineering profession.

Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar, Vice-Chancellor of UET Lahore, highlighted the role of engineers, in general, and of chemical engineers, in particular, in the society and appreciated the active role of the faculty of the Department of Chemical Engineering. He stressed research to solve indigenous problems and produce value-added product to help increase foreign exchange reserves in the country. Mr Haroon Ali Khan- President Sundar Industrial State was the chief guest.

On the occasion, he emphasized on the close collaboration of academia and industry. Keynote talks were delivered by Engr. Moazzam Rasheed, Director Pakistan Chemistry Council CEO of Bin Rasheed Chemicals Pakistan, Engr. Khalid Bashir, and Prof. Dr. Aamir Ijaz on the scope and future of Chemical Engineering education and practice in Pakistan. Prof. Dr. Mahmood Saleem, President Piche and Vice-Chancellor of Mir Chakar Khan Rind University of Technology thanked all the participants.

The conference provided a platform to the researchers to broadcast their ideas and tried to bridge the gap between the academia and the local industry by bringing together professionals from the two segments under a single umbrella. Other academic and industrial collaborators/partners besides UET Lahore and Punjab University included Mir Chakar Khan Rind University of Technology (Dera Ghazi Khan), Khwaja Fareed University of Engineering and Information Technology (Rahim Yar Khan), Sharif College of Engineering and Technology (Lahore), Diamond Jumbolon Foam (Pvt.) UET Debating Society conducted 29th All Pakistan Parliamentary and Debating contest 

Lahore, March 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):UET Debating Society feels immense pride in successfully conducting the 29th All Pakistan Parliamentary and Debating contest. The event spanned over 3 days and featured over 200 participants from all over Pakistan. The event was composed of 2 modules; Parliamentary and Debating. A healthy competition was witnessed at the event and the winners were as follows:

Team UETMUN organized the Fifth Edition of the UET Model United Nations Conference

Lahore, March 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):Team UETMUN successfully organized the fifth edition of the UET Model United Nations Conference, i.e., UETMUN V from 18th – 20th March 2022. The event kicked off with a vibrant opening ceremony held in the Chemical Seminar Hall on 18th March 2022 where the house was formally declared open for debate.

The conference attracted delegations from all around Pakistan. Institutions like CMH, Military College for Signals, NUST, FAST, COMSATS, UVAS, LGS, MAO College, Government College University, and many others joined the conference to discuss the important issues faced by the world of today. The respected faculty members from Military College Signals, i.e., Brig. Razzaq, Dr. Sajid, and Dr. Farkhanda also joined the event and observed the proceedings. The 3-day conference features the following committees and topics:

United Nations Security Council: Russia – Ukraine Crises

United Nations Women: Gender Inequality, glass ceilings, and stereotypes: assessing and tackling the barriers for women in STEM

United Nations Development Program: Climate Change and global displacement crises.

SPECPOL: Neocolonialism in a post-colonial world. Reforming Neocolonialism trade patterns, institutions of government, and client states.

Joint Session of Parliament: National Security Policy of Pakistan 2022-2026

Prime Minister’s Crises Cabinet: Pakistan in the year 1999.

The event featured heated debate, top-notch diplomacy and fine pieces of documentation. It was only after 3 days of constant pressure handling and diplomacy that the dais members picked the best delegates from the committee for the master round held at the closing ceremony. All of the dais members took part in the master round that featured a crises committee discussing the topic of World War 1. The closing ceremony was graced by the presence of the respected Director of Students Affairs (DSA) Prof. Dr. Asif Ali Qaiser, who shared his valuable thoughts for the event.

The closing ceremony was also the most awaited part of the event as it was here that the awards were announced. The Under Secretary Generals announced the awards for the specialized and general committees followed by the announcement of the best delegation awards. The best delegation award was shared by 2 institutions namely CMH Lahore and Military College of Signals as their delegates outperformed the rest of the others in the committee. The event formally ended with a lavish dinner and smiles all around.

Tree Plantation at Chemistry Department UET Lahore

Lahore, March 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Chemistry, UET, Lahore, organised “Green Pakistan Plantation Drive” today as a part of UET Centennial celebrations. Worthy VC, Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar inaugurated the campaign. He planted a tree along with Chairperson Prof Dr Farhat Yasmeen, Deans, Registrar, faculty members, and students of the department.

The event was successfully managed by the students of BS Chemistry, MPhil FST and MPhil App Chem along with the staff of the department. The VC appreciated the efforts of the Chairperson for the noble cause of plantation as part of university’s plan for a clean, green, and sustainable UET.

5th International Conference on Energy Conservation and Efficiency organized by CERAD UET Lahore

Lahore, March 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):“The energy industry needs to not only adopt new technologies, business models and reduce costs but also take the clean energy agenda to the decision-making level,” says Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Shibli Faraz at the 5th ICECE 2022.

Centre for Energy Research and Development (CERAD), UET Lahore has been organizing its flagship event, International Conference on Energy Conservation and Efficiency (ICECE) consistently for the last four years. This year CERAD organized the 5th edition of the annual conference to provide the opportunity and platform to the researchers, engineers, and energy experts to explore and exchange ideas in the rapidly developing domain of energy efficiency and conservation strategies in collaboration with Punjab Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency (PEECA), IEEE Power and Energy Society, IEEE Industry Application Society Lahore Chapter, and IEEE Lahore Section. Considering the COVID 19 impact, the conference took place virtually this year again.

The opening ceremony of the conference was graced by the presence of the Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Mr. Shibli Faraz as a Chief Guest. Governor Punjab, Ch. Muhammad Sarwar, Provincial Minister for Energy, Dr. Muhammad Akhtar Malik, Provincial Minister of Higher Education Department, Raja Yasir Humayun Sarfaraz, Chairman of PM Task Force on Science and Technology, Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, and MD PEECA, Mr. Abdul Rehman were invited as distinguished guests. The federal Minister for Science and Technology congratulated the organizers and participants of ICECE 2022.

He said, “The energy industry needs to not only adopt new technologies, business models and reduce costs but also take the clean energy agenda to the decision-making level. Therefore, the Punjab government is fully prepared to support all relevant sectors, adopt new strategies, change the energy system, and improve the lives of the people”. Governor Punjab, Ch. Muhammad Sarwar also emphasized the importance of energy efficiency and conservation. “We as a nation, have to act, plan, anticipate the situation and change our mindset towards indigenous resources to stand on our own grounds. I believe that energy transition will extremely affect society everywhere and at many different levels”, he remarked.

Vice-Chancellor UET Lahore, Prof. Dr. Syed Mansoor Sarwar welcomed the honourable guests, invited speakers, industrial experts, public and private institutes for their participation and also appreciated Dr. Waqar Mahmood and his team for organizing a successful conference.

Collectively 100 researchers from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, China, Malaysia, Australia, Germany, USA, submitted their papers and only the top-quality papers were accepted by the technical evaluation committee qualifying the merit-based criteria. Speakers were invited from prominent universities of Pakistan and other countries like the United Kingdom, Serbia, Malaysia to deliver talks in the areas related to Energy Efficiency and Conservation.

Director CERAD, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood shared the modules of the conference with the participants and also highlighted the history of the International Conference on Energy Conservation and Efficiency at the opening ceremony. A virtual exposition was also designed where projects from different research labs of CERAD were displayed in a 3D environment. More than 20 industries showcased their products in the exposition including Kingor Battery, JA Solar, DAS Solar, MTM Smart Solutions, Shenzhen USER Special Display Technologies, Shenzhen LEMI Technology Development Co., Ltd, Shenzhen Carst Technology Co. Ltd, Hangzhou Everfine Photo-E-Info Co., Ltd, FnS Power Technology Inc, TRC Transportation Research and Consulting, Associated Commercial Agencies, FB Energy Limited, Power Highway, Okasha Smart, Solar Max, Crest LED, Solar Studio, Tesla Solar, SolDrive, Reon Energy Ltd, BarqBox Energies Pvt. Ltd, Fast Cables, Get Technologies.

Conference sideways, A student-based competition was also organized by the Centre for Energy Research and Development in collaboration with National Productivity Organization Pakistan in which more than 100 students from various institutes participated. The competition contains two modules: “Productivity Poster Competition and Debate/Cleantech Idea Competition” themed Energy Conservation and Efficiency. In the competition, students showcased posters and presented their innovative ideas in the field of energy conservation and efficiency, which can be turned into productive renewable energy solutions and produce great ideas to conserve energy across the country.

The Productivity Poster Competition was technically chaired by Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering UET Lahore New Campus KSK, Dr. Muhammad Farooq whereas the Debate/Cleantech Idea Competition was chaired by Mr. Farhan Riaz, Program Manager, Technology Incubation and Commercialization Centre KICS UET Lahore. The prize distribution ceremony was held on the same day at the end of the competition. Mr. Sohail Ahmad Chaudhary, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Industries and Production, Mr. Syed Musa Hassan, Deputy General Manager, National Productivity Organization, Director CERAD, Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood, and the jury members of both modules attended the ceremony and awarded cash prizes of up to Rs 1 Lac to the winners of both modules.

The closing ceremony of the conference took place on the second day of the conference. Director CERAD, Dr. Waqar described briefly the 2-day event. The conference ended up with the certificate distribution to the participants and organizers.
