World Mobile launches centres for Blockchain innovation and development in Pakistan

Lahore, January 25, 2022 (PPI-OT):World Mobile, in partnership with Worldcall has signed collaboration MoU with the University of Central Punjab (UCP) and Akhuwat Micofinance Foundation (AMF) for establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Blockchain technology. World Mobile will support and endorse sustainable programs that would be instrumental for the introduction, promotion and development of blockchain technology throughout the region.

UCP is known for its gender and social inclusiveness with a student body of over 40,000. UCP also has one of the best scholarship programs and has already disbursed nearly USD 30 million to deserving students over the years. UCP enjoys a good standing as a center of learning including its Computer Sciences, Information Technology and Data Sciences programs. UCP recently started offering blockchain as part of its curriculum. Under the program, World Mobile and partners will provide UCP access to certifications and accreditations in blockchain technologies.

AMF is the largest interest free microfinance organization in the world providing economic enablement to communities across Pakistan. Under the foundation, Akhuwat Education Services provide free education along with financial support to deserving students. AMF believes that access to quality education holds the key to future financial well-being of the communities it serves. Under the MoU World Mobile and its partners will provide support for the establishment of a blockchain lab and connectivity to blockchain eco-system across the globe.

Talking on the occasion, Dr Nassar Ikram, UCP Pro Rector shared that UCP has been gearing up to introduce modern technologies in their academic and professional education programs and the partnership of WTL and WMG would ensure that full potential of blockchain as technology platform is unlocked to meet the requirements in technical and social domains.

Dr. Amjad Saqib, founder of Akhuwat and recipient of prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award 2021 for his poverty alleviation work, thanked World Mobile and Worldcall for their involvement in the establishment of blockchain lab at Akhuwat University Campus in Kasur.

MoU with Pasundan University Indonesia

Lahore, January 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):University of Central Punjab has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Pasundan University, Bandung, Indonesia on 30th December, 2021 for offering placements to UCP students and faculty, providing consultancy services in multiple domains, collaborative research studies, provision of small-scaled industrial problems as final year projects and organizing conferences.

In the online MoU signing ceremony, UCP was led by Pro-Rector, Dr Nassar Ikram and Pasundan University was led by Dean of Law, Dr. Anthon F. Susanto. Dr. Hadia Awan, Dean of Law UCP and Dr. Athar Mansoor Director ORIC were also present on the occasion. Senior management from both universities committed themselves to moving forward at a swift pace for the execution of the MoU.

International Day for People with Disability 

Lahore, January 05, 2022 (PPI-OT):The word “disability” is not respectable and should be excluded from the dictionary because disabled persons perform the same as able ones. It was said in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) workshop, University of Central Punjab.

Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), in collaboration with the Centre for Special Needs (CSNs): A Project of Khidmat ul Nisa Welfare Society celebrated International Day of People with Disability on 18th December 2021 at the University of Central Punjab, Lahore. The event was organized by Muhammad Farooq (Faculty Industry Liaison Officer, FASS) and Ms. Syeda Ayesha (Lecturer, Department of Psychology).

The day was observed to celebrate the abilities of people with special abilities. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness among different stakeholders by reinforcing the importance of securing the rights of people with special abilities to participate fully, equally, and effectively in society.

The event’s glory was highlighted by exceptional performances of children with special abilities. This event demonstrated that when children with special abilities are empowered, they can perform as well as any other child. Honourable guests from all fields of life showed up to express solidarity with those with special abilities.

Samina Mir, CEO of Khidmat ul Nisa Welfare Society, shared her organization’s philosophy and journey. Dr. Izhar Ul Haq Hashmi (Director Punjab Welfare Trust for the Disabled) expresses his feelings that today he is out of words to comment about the special children’s performances and the working of the Center for Special Needs. He appreciated the spirit of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), the University of Central Punjab (UCP), in hosting such events. Ms. Mussarat Misbah (Founder of Deplix and SMILE foundation) extends her organization’s cooperation for CSNs. Dr. Noor-ul-Zaman from Rotary Club offered free medical camps for students with special abilities.

Dr. Imran Murtaza (MS, Fountain House) applauded the efforts and contribution of UCP and CSNs, and he said that fountain house and Akhuwat foundation doors are always open for the betterment of people with special abilities. Col.(R) Masood ul Haq (CEO National School) expressed his wishes and presented a cheque to Ms. Samina Mir for persons with special abilities. Ms. Khawar Sultana (Director, Inclusive Education Programme, Amin Maktab) said that we have to put more organized efforts for inclusive education for a person with special abilities. Ms. Samreen Tariq (Principal, Beaconhouse School System) noted that the word “Disable” should be excluded from the English Dictionaries.

Mr. Muhammad Farooq (FILO-FASS) and Ms. Ayesha Sheeraz (Lecturer, Department of Psychology) from UCP appreciated the efforts and offered support to the Center for Special Needs to bring positive change in the lives of special children, their families, and the community at large. Mr. Farooq shared that people with special abilities should be treated with more respect and care, and it’s the right time to invest more in them because they bring achievements for Pakistan in Olympics and many other international events.

Syeda Ayesha concludes the ceremony, acknowledged the efforts of Center of Special Needs, and pays thanks to all guests on behalf of Dean, FASS, and UCP for making the event a success. She added that the performances of the special childrens glorified the event.

Ms. Samina Mir (CEO- Khidmat ul Nisa welfare Society) extended her gratitude to Prof. Dr. Nasar Ikram (Honourable Prorector), Dr. Fehmida Sultana (Dean of FASS); Dr. Athar Mansoor (Director ORIC); Dr. Shazia Hassan (HoD, Department of Psychology), Mr. Mohammad Farooq (FILO-FASS), Syeda Ayesha (Lecturer, Department of Psychology), Administration of the UCP, Security Management team, IT team, and auditorium team for making the event successful.

The shield was presented to Dr. Fehmida Sultana- Dean, FASS, which Ms. Syeda Ayesha and Mr. Muhammad Farooq received on behalf of the Dean. Awareness session on Intellectual Property Rights 

Lahore, December 29, 2021 (PPI-OT):University of Central Punjab (UCP) organized an awareness session on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) from the platform of ORIC with the collaboration of Faculty of Life Sciences and Department of Food Sciences on 23 December. Mr. Muhammad Ismail, Director IPO Pakistan was invited as a key note speaker.

The session entailed a welcome note by the Pro-Rector UCP, Dr. Nassar Ikram, who emphasized on the importance of IP and focus of the UCP leadership in developing the IP Protection culture. During the detailed presentation given by Mr. Ismail (Director IPO), it was discussed how inventors can benefit from protecting their IPs and what are the royalty channels that follow afterwards. Moreover, some real-world IP case studies were also discussed.

In direct relevance to UCP’s efforts to increase its pool of IPs, certificates were also distributed amongst the winning teams of the Food Product Development competition which was recently organized by the Faculty of Life Sciences under the Department of Food Sciences. As a result of this competition 50 potential IPs have also been identified. The session concluded on a short networking between the delegate from IPO and faculty members.

FASS Collaborate with NCA 

Lahore, December 23, 2021 (PPI-OT):Country Head of Norwegian Church Aid (NCA), Ms. Anne Masterson, along with Ms. Sabeeha Shaheen (Executive Director Burgad), met with Dean Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Prof. Dr. Fehmida Sultana. Meeting was also attended by Dr. Waheed Ahmad Khan (Head of Politics and IR Department), Dr. Shazia Hasan (Head of Psychology Department), Dr. Babar Sultan A. Khan (Head of English Department), and Dr. Arslan Tariq Rana (Head of Economics Department). This Meeting was organized by Miss. Fatima Urooj (Coordinator FASS).

The main purpose of this meeting was to explore areas in which both parties could enhance collaboration in different areas. Ms. Anne Masterson briefed the participants about the activities of NCA Alliance. More specifically, she highlighted the point that her organization provides research funding in different areas, including environmental preservation, gender equality, minority rights, and human rights in general.

Dr. Fehmida Sultana and other HoDs introduced UCP and different areas in which university faculty and staff are engaged in research, teaching, and community service. Both parties discussed at length areas in which collaboration could be possible, and agreed to find suitable projects to enhance collaboration. Meeting was concluded with group photograph.
