NUMS-Department of Public Health Organized Two- Day Workshop On Research Skills for BSPH Students

Rawalpindi, March 29, 2023 (PPI-OT): NUMS Department of Public Health (NDPH) organized a two-day Workshop from March 16 to 17 at its PWD Campus to train its students to develop research skills particularly literature research, referencing and hands on SPSS. NDPH aimed at producing a force of Public Health experts having research skills and abilities to evolve innovative health policies and programs for community development.

Highlighting the importance of research, the speakers said that scientific progress can only be made by following principles of research. Research generates novel ideas, builds credibility, and develops understanding and analytical skills so a researcher could implement his or her guts to rationalize the work and build a better foundation for followers in the career field and so they could take the right decision at the right time. The ceremony was moderated by Dr Raima Asif (Assistant Professor Public Health). She delivered a comprehensive overview of Literature Search and Zotero (Referencing Manager) on the first day of Workshop which was followed by Hands on Practice on Mendeley (Referencing Manager) by Ms Rubab Zulfiqar (Lecturer Public Health).

Lt Col Tahira Amjad (Retd), Associate Professor Community Medicine Department FUSH was the moderator on the second day of workshop. She conducted Hands on Practice on SPSS. The activity began with a pre-session survey to determine the knowledge of the participants regarding the subject. She delivered the knowledge in a very professional way while giving an opportunity to try out new methods and explore advanced dimension of learning. The workshop was concluded by a post-session survey to get feedback on its usefulness and to understand what improvement was needed for such an event in future.

Dr Tamkeen Jaffry, Associate Professor Public Health in her concluding remarks highlighted the importance of the workshop for students as it provided insight into diverse topics and motivated students to explore new areas of interest. She congratulated and admired the team of DPH comprising Dr Raima Asif, Ms. Rubab Zulfiqar and Dr Nasir Javed for the commendable task and appreciated the participants for their active participation and engagement in the workshop. At the end souvenir and certificates were presented to Lt Col Tahira Amjad (Retd) Associate Professor Community Medicine Department FUSH while certificates were also awarded to the facilitators and the students.

Vice Chancellors’ Forum 2023 Universities in The Islamic World: Towards Disruptive Technology in A Globalized World

Rawalpindi, March 29, 2023 (PPI-OT): President Arif Alvi, while highlighting the huge potential of the youth bulge of the country, has called for setting a vision for higher education as the Muslims could not keep pace with adoption of technology and this needed to change on the war-footing.

He made these remarks in his video message to Vice Chancellors’ “Forum 2023 Universities in the Islamic World: Towards Disruptive Technology in a Globalized World,” held in Islamabad from March 19 to 20 which was jointly organized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, Islamabad, COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Islamic World Educational, and Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), and British Council Pakistan.

Over 250 Vice Chancellors, including 40 from 20 OIC countries participated in the Forum, which was aimed at sharing experiences, pooling resources, fostering collaborations, strengthening networks between universities, and promoting dialogue on the future of higher education in the Islamic World. In his opening remarks, the chief guest, Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training, Rana Tanveer Hussain, called for skill development of the youth and said that the universities needed to respond more effectively to the emerging challenges. Dr Salim M. Al Malik, Director General, ICESCO, enlightened the audience that the development of robotics would make 97 million jobs obsolete in the next 10 years, 375 million people would have to switch their jobs, causing immense disruption and increasing the digital divide.

Chairman HEC, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed urged the participants to contemplate how the Muslim Ummah could be steered into the right direction. He gave an overview for establishing the platform of VC Forum and how it would help higher education institutions in the Islamic world to collaborate and contribute to socio-economic development. Air Cdre Muhammad Ismail, SI(M) (Retd), Consultant Quality Assurance, NUMS, Ex Consultant QAD, HEC, spoke on the topic of “Revised Quality Assurance Framework for Pakistan”. He was referred to by most speakers as he had significant contribution in HEC’s Policy making during his tenure as Consultant at HEC.

A Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) between the HEC and the World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF) was also signed during the opening ceremony. This MoU is expected to enhance the capabilities of entrepreneurs and knowledge-based start-ups by matching them with global investors and providing them with global networking.

Self-Institutional Performance Evaluation 2022-23

Rawalpindi, March 27, 2023 (PPI-OT):National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) conducted its fourth round of annual Self- Institutional Performance Evaluation (IPE) on March 14-15 2023. The self-review process was organized and facilitated by the Quality Assurance Directorate of NUMS. HEC had conducted NUMS First ever IPE in March 2018, and since then NUMS has been conducting its Self IPEs.

The prime objective of the IPE was to self-evaluate the performance of the university based on 11 quality standards mentioned in IPE manual of HEC. The panel comprised of four members, one external expert, Dr. Farrukh Idrees, Director QEC, National Defense University, Islamabad and three internal members including Brig Dr. Amir Rashid, Head of Biochemistry Department and Head LQEC (AM College), Air Cdre Muhammad Ismail, SI (M) (Retd), Consultant Quality Assurance and Dr. Erum Monis Deputy Director(DD) QA.

The Self-IPE activities commenced with detailed presentation by the DD QA on NUMS programs, polices, procedure and QA activities. The NUMS University Portfolio Report 2022-23 had already been presented to the panel members prior to the SIPE visit. Thereafter, the panel members reviewed the compliance report of the previous year followed by the reviewing of program files, faculty files, and students’ dossiers of all NUMS departments.

On the second day, the IPE panel members held meetings with Deans, Head of Departments, Faculty members and Students to examine the academic activities and recorded their live feedback at NUMS Main Campus at PWD. The panel inspected the facilities available on campus, by visiting the laboratories, classrooms and library and commended the rapid growth of the university with initiation of several new programs including two new PhD programs at NUMS.

Later, the panel dedicated time for discussion on SIPE findings, report consolidation and exit meeting with the Lt Gen Wasim Alamgir, HI (M), Vice-Chancellor, NUMS. Dr. Farrukh Idrees, expressed his appreciation for all the efforts to organize the successful IPE activity and highlighted the institution’s commitment to improving medical education and healthcare facilities in Pakistan. He stated that NUMS, is playing a leading role in medical research and that projects such as the NUMS Institute of Advanced Studies and Research (NIASAR) and the upcoming NUMS Medical City are evidence of its efforts to reshape healthcare landscape to meet international standards.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed his gratitude for reassuring him on the satisfactory functioning of university as per HEC defined criteria and presented a souvenir to Dr Farrukh Idrees as a token of appreciation. A group photo concluded the SIPE activities 2022-23.

March nutrition month celebrated by NUMS dept. of nutrition and dietetics

Rawalpindi, March 22, 2023 (PPI-OT):NUMS Department of Nutrition and Dietetics organized various activities like Nutritional Assessment Camp, Presentations, Panel discussion, Nutrition Awareness Walk and Healthy Cuisine Competition at PWD Campus to celebrate the National Nutrition Month in March for raising awareness regarding the significance of nutrition among masses.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, based in the US, every year puts forward a specific theme keeping in view the global nutrition situation. The theme for the year 2023 is “Fuel for the Future”. The event was attended by about 400 students, faculty members and administrative staff members. March Nutrition Month is celebrated in accordance with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) specifically (SDG) 2 for Zero Hunger and SDG 3 for good health and well-being.

During this month, efforts are made to create awareness about making informed food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits.

Prof. Dr. Aisha Mohyuddin Dean, Multidisciplinary Studiers welcomed the participants and thanked them for sharing their thoughts. Mr. Shahid Fazal from “Nutrition International,” gave an enlightening presentation on “Investing in Nutrition for our Future”. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion based on “Fuel for the Future” and “Eating with Sustainability in Mind”. This session was moderated by Dr. Zehra Parveen.

Panel members consisted of Dr. Umar Farooq, Associate Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, NUMS, Mr. Shahid Fazal, Regional Advisor for “Nutrition International” and Mr. Faiz Rasool, Senior Policy Advisor for “Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition”.

HoD, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dr. Abdul Momin Rizwan Ahmad, in his concluding remarks thanked the experts for highlighting various aspects of nutrition. NUMS, Pro VC (Acad) Maj Gen Saleem Ahmed Khan, HI(M) (Retd) was the chief guest on the occasion and distributed shields among the panelists. He also appreciated the efforts of the department for organizing the event.

The Pro VC (Acad) joined the Nutrition awareness walk which was followed by a healthy cuisine competition, managed by Dr. Sana Ikram.

A nutritional assessment camp was also organized by the department of NUMS Nutrition and Dietetics while a team of senior students, led by faculty members Ms. Tara Khursheed, assessed the nutritional status of some visitors and gave them dietary advice accordingly.

A game stall, led by the faculty member Ms. Juweria Abid was also set up to involve the students and faculty in sports.

NUMS faculty members and students participate at International Educational Expo by RCCI

Rawalpindi, March 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): NUMS faculty members from its different departments participated at a 2-day International Education Expo at a local hotel in Rawalpindi (RWP) from March 4 to 5 which was organized by RWP Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) for providing an opportunity to students for meeting experts for career guidance in various fields. NUMS delegation was led Dr. Fozia Fatima, Assistant professor Department of Health Professions Education and comprised.

Dr. Raees Khan, Dr. Nadia Shabnam, Dr. Amjad Sohail, Ms. Saira Javed, Ms. Rubab, and Dr. Tara Khursheed. Besides Mr. Waqas Ashraf Manager Armed Forces Postgraduate Medical Institute (AFPGMI), Mr. Salman Haider and Mr. Qamar Raiz from NUMS student affairs including university’s students Kanza Maryam, Hawaid Ahmed, Rafique, Ain-ul-Fatima, Myra Shahbaz, and Fizza Javed participated in the event. A number of other students from NUMS and AFPGMI sought career information in various disciplines.

The central theme of the Expo was to empower the students about the scope of varied career paths through group interaction, sharing interests, and know-how on multiple career fields through career counselling and aptitude gauging from the experts under one roof. The RCCI had invited experts and consultants from the best educational institutes and universities from all over Pakistan.

NUMS team, on the occasion, briefed the audience about its undergraduate and graduate programs. It interacted with other participants, including Chamber members, ambassadors of Indonesia, Morocco, and Malaysia, as well as students, their families, and business stakeholders. NUMS Team was honoured with presentation of an acknowledgement shield from the President of RCCI Mr. Saqib Rafiq.

NUMS Inter College Cricket Championship-2023

Rawalpindi, March 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): Lt Gen Wasim Alamgir, HI(M), Vice Chancellor National University of Medical Sciences has said that Sports play a significant role in growth of children and adults and help them cope with challenges of life by providing them physical and mental strength. The Vice Chancellor was speaking as a chief guest, at the prize distribution ceremony on the conclusion of a month long “NUMS Inter College Cricket Championship -2023”. The final played between Army Medical College and CMH Multan Institute of Medical Sciences was won by Army Medical College in a nail-biting finish at GHQ Cricket Ground Rawalpindi. The Cricket Championship began in the first week of February and concluded on March 5.

The Vice Chancellor gave away shields and prizes to the winner and runner up teams. He congratulated the teams for putting up a splendid show. Cadet Muneeb Amjad from Army Medical College was declared Man of the Match. Lt Gen Wasim Alamgir said Sports activities would be a permanent feature of the university, adding that new indoor sports will be added for the girls from next year.

He said in life, one has to face many challenges, and sports help to cope these challenges. In addition, sports also promote values such as mutual respect, cooperation, learning, sportsmanship etc. amongst the individuals, he added. NUMS Inter College Championship was participated by 8 teams which were divided into North and South Zones.

The North Zone comprised teams from Army Medical College, CMH Kharian Medical College, NUMS Social and Health Sciences and Wah Medical College. The North Zone matches were held at GHQ Cricket Ground, Rawalpindi and were hosted by the Army Medical College. The South Zone comprised teams from CMH Multan Institute of Medical Sciences, CMH Bahawalpur Medical College, CMH Lahore Medical College and Quetta Institute of Medical Sciences.

The South Zone matches were held at DHA Cricket Ground Multan and were hosted by CMH Institute of Medical Sciences Multan. All the participants showed sportsman spirit to make the event successful. The overall planning, coordination and monitoring of the event was done by NUMS Department of Student Affairs.
