Johannesburg: South Africa's Under-19 women's cricket team is gearing up for the ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup 2027, with head coach Dinesha Devnarain anticipating a challenging tournament for her squad. The competition, which marks its third edition, will take place in Bangladesh and Nepal from January 21 to February 6, 2027.
According to International Cricket Council, South Africa, which reached the finals in the previous tournament in 2025, has been placed in Group B alongside New Zealand, Samoa, and Pakistan. Devnarain expressed confidence in her team's capabilities, acknowledging the unique challenges posed by each opponent. "It's an exciting group and one that will challenge us in different ways," Devnarain stated, noting the team's recent series against Pakistan and previous encounters with New Zealand and Samoa.
Reflecting on the 2025 tournament hosted in Malaysia, Devnarain emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences. "What 2025 showed us is that South African women's cricket belongs on the biggest stage," she said. The team's ambition extends beyond reaching the finals, focusing on improving standards and aiming for victory in 2027.
South Africa's preparations are bolstered by their recent tour to Pakistan, where they won a five-match T20I series 3-2. Devnarain highlighted the value of playing in subcontinent conditions, which tested the team's adaptability and decision-making skills. "For me, the biggest learning was that talent alone is not enough at the international level," she added.
As the team looks ahead to the tournament, their goals are clear. "Our ambition is to win the World Cup," Devnarain stated, emphasizing a long-term vision to strengthen South African women's cricket and develop future Proteas stars.
