Karachi: Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) launched Pakistan's 80th Independence Day celebrations with a flag-hoisting ceremony and a plantation drive at its campus on Monday. The activities, which will continue until August 14, aim to foster national unity and promote environmental awareness under the theme "Together for a Peaceful and Prosperous Pakistan."

According to Sindh Madressatul Islam University, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, led the flag-hoisting ceremony by raising the national flag on the university's historic main building. The event was attended by faculty members, staff, and students, and began with the national anthem followed by a plantation drive. Dr. Sahrai emphasized that the 80th Independence Day is a significant milestone, offering an opportunity to reflect on the country's history and responsibilities associated with freedom.

Dr. Sahrai highlighted the importance of striving for peace, progress, and prosperity in Pakistan, explaining that SMIU's two-week celebration includes various events aimed at educating the younger generation about the country's independence history and encouraging their involvement in national development. He underscored the responsibility of SMIU in commemorating Independence Day, given its historical connection with prominent leaders of the Pakistan Movement, including Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

He urged the university's faculty, staff, and students to actively participate in the planned Independence Day activities. Following the ceremony, Dr. Sahrai planted a sapling on campus, symbolizing the university's dedication to environmental conservation. The plantation drive, organized by the Directorate of Student Affairs and Counselling, marked the beginning of SMIU's Independence Day celebrations.
