Ranjan Madugalle Celebrates 400th ODI as Match Referee in Landmark Career Achievement

Colombo: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has celebrated a significant milestone in cricket officiating, as Ranjan Madugalle officiated his 400th Men’s One Day International (ODI), becoming the first match referee to reach this mark. The historic event took place during the third ODI between Sri Lanka and India in Colombo.

According to International Cricket Council, Madugalle, a former Sri Lankan cricketer and the longest-serving member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, was honored with a commemorative plaque presented by Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva. Madugalle’s career spans over three decades, during which he has also refereed in 216 Men’s Test matches and 163 Men’s T20 Internationals, along with appearances in multiple World Cups and other major tournaments.

Sean Easey, ICC Senior Manager of Umpires and Referees, lauded Madugalle’s dedication and passion for cricket, acknowledging his extensive service and influence in shaping the officiating standards worldwide. Madugalle expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has had to engage with international cricket over the years and reflected on his unexpected yet deeply fulfilling career in cricket administration.

Madugalle’s journey began as a player, where he represented Sri Lanka in 21 Tests and 63 ODIs from 1979 to 1988, participating in the nation’s first-ever Test match and three World Cups. His transition to match refereeing started in 1993 with a Test match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe in Karachi, marking the beginning of what would be the longest career as an ICC Match Referee.
