Punjab University Seminar Highlights SCO’s Role in Regional Stability and Cooperation

Lahore: The Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) at the University of Punjab, in collaboration with the Center of Pakistan and International Relations (COPAIR), recently hosted a seminar focused on the “Significance of SCO for Regional Cooperation and Development”. The event coincided with Pakistan hosting the twenty-third session of the SCO, underscoring its pivotal role in regional dynamics.

According to University of the Punjab, the seminar was presided over by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem Mazhar, Director General of the National Language Promotion Department, Islamabad. He celebrated the timing and relevance of the seminar, linking it to the SCO’s influence on regional peace, security, and connectivity. Ms. Amna Munawar Awan, President of COPAIR, served as the keynote speaker, discussing socio-economic cooperation within the SCO framework and Pakistan’s strategic position as a regional connector.

The discussions highlighted the SCO’s capacity as the world’s largest regional organization by geography and population, emphasizing its potential impact on global political and economic landscapes. Prof. Dr. Naheed S. Goraya, Director of CSAS, outlined the critical intersections of peace, security, and regional connectivity essential for prosperity and stability.

The seminar also addressed new political dynamics in the region, with Prof. Dr. Rana Ijaz Ahmed of the Department of Political Science, discussing the shifts from traditional Western alliances towards multipolar partnerships, driven by shared interests in security, trade, and regional stability.

The event concluded with an interactive Q and A session, fostering dialogue on how to achieve effective regional connectivity while ensuring the peace and security of the involved areas.
