Punjab University Library Club Hosts Talk on Socio-Cultural Linguistics and Parliamentary History

Lahore, The Punjab University Library Club recently hosted an event where two significant works were introduced to the academic community: ‘Urdu Ki Samaji Lughat’ by Dr. Tariq Hashmi and “The Parliament of Pakistan” by Mahboob Hussain. The session saw Assistant Professor Dr. Qaiser Khalid Mehmood from the Department of Gender Studies and Assistant Professor Dr. Mariyam Kamal from the Centre for South Asian Studies lead insightful discussions on the socio-cultural dynamics of language and the historical intricacies of Pakistan’s parliament.

According to University of The Punjab, Dr. Mehmood’s talk on ‘Urdu Ki Samaji Lughat’ offered a deep dive into the socio-cultural layers embedded within the Urdu language, underlining how historical events like monarchy and colonialism have shaped its development. He advocated for the cultivation of a language that transcends gender biases and discriminatory undertones, highlighting the need for linguistic equality.

Dr. Kamal, in her analysis of ‘The Parliament of Pakistan’, navigated through the complex relationship between former Prime Minister Bhutto and the Parliament in the 1970s. Her examination brought to the fore the significant role the Parliament has played as a forum for dissent and the ways in which it has transformed throughout Pakistan’s political history.

The well-attended session, which included faculty members and students, was part of the library club’s ongoing efforts to encourage intellectual discourse on topics of national and cultural importance. The event was not only a reflection of Punjab University’s vibrant academic culture but also a testament to its commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of Pakistan’s socio-political fabric.
