PU ICET Hosts Seminar on Outcome Based Education for Engineering Quality Assurance

Lahore, The Punjab University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (PU ICET) conducted a seminar on “Implementation and Assessment of Outcome Based Education (OBE)” aimed at enhancing the faculty’s understanding and application of the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) guidelines. This initiative is part of a broader effort to align engineering education in Pakistan with international standards, leveraging the benefits of the Washington Accord to which PEC is a signatory.

According to University of The Punjab, the event featured Dr. Fahad Rehman, an Associate Professor at COMSATS and an alumnus of ICET, who graduated in 2006. Prominent university figures, including Prof Dr. Abdullah Khan Durrani, the Dean Faculty of Chemical and Materials Engineering, ICET Director Prof Dr. Rafi Ullah Khan, and PEC-AC Convener Dr. Ayyaz Muhammad, extended a warm welcome to Dr. Rehman, expressing gratitude for his contributions to the institution.

Dr. Rehman’s presentation covered critical aspects of the OBE system, including the formulation of Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), their mapping with Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), and the integration of learning levels and domains. He also discussed the development of rubrics for courses and labs, the tackling of Complex Engineering Problems (CEP), the promotion of Open Ended Lab (OEL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL), along with the specific requirements for laboratory evaluation and safety under OBE. Further, Dr. Rehman elaborated on the PEC evaluation criteria, Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) processes, and the importance of establishing industrial and international linkages to meet PEC’s quality assurance standards.

The seminar was deemed highly beneficial for the faculty and participants, equipping them with valuable insights into effectively implementing the OBE system. This initiative underscores PU ICET’s commitment to producing quality chemical engineering graduates who are well-prepared to thrive in the global professional arena.
