Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized Pakistan's dedication to ensuring the right to access information for all citizens during his address on the International Day for Universal Access to Information. He highlighted the significance of this right in empowering citizens to engage meaningfully in democratic processes.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari noted that the 18th Constitutional Amendment and the Right of Access to Information Act, 2017, have laid down a robust legal framework to uphold this right at the federal level. He acknowledged the complexities introduced by digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies in the dissemination and consumption of information, stressing the importance of distinguishing reliable content from misinformation.

President Zardari pointed out challenges posed by the potential manipulation of information by various actors, including state entities, non-state actors, and tech corporations. He emphasized the critical role of journalists, media organizations, and communication professionals in guiding citizens through the evolving information landscape.

The president underscored the need to balance protecting the right to know with addressing misinformation and disinformation without stifling legitimate journalism and public debate. He called for transparency and accountability from public institutions to ensure citizens can access credible information, particularly on issues affecting their lives.
