PPP Senators Discuss Media Protection and Health Legislation

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party Senators convened a press conference at the Central Secretariat in Islamabad to address recent legislative developments in the Senate. The session, held on Wednesday, was led by Senators Saleem Mandviwala, Ms. Palwasha Khan, and Shahadat Awan.

Senator Saleem Mandviwala announced the unanimous passage of the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals (Amendment) Act, 2022. This legislation aims to empower journalists and media professionals by resolving their issues without judicial or police intervention. Senator Mandviwala emphasized that the Pakistan Peoples Party has always focused on legislation benefiting various sectors of society.

Additionally, the Senate passed the National Institute of Health (Re-organization) (Amendment) Act, 2024. Senator Mandviwala highlighted the absence of a comprehensive cancer patient registry in Pakistan. The new registry will help identify prevalent cancer types in different regions, facilitating a national action plan for cancer prevention.

Senator Mandviwala responded to media queries by stating that mechanisms will ensure the effective implementation of the journalists’ protection law. He expressed willingness to amend the legislation if necessary.

Regarding cancer patient registration, Senator Mandviwala mentioned inter-provincial cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic as a model. The cancer registry will enable relevant departments to analyze accurate data.

Senator Shahadat Awan addressed queries on the oath administration for reserved seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. He stated that the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court acted constitutionally by directing the Governor to administer the oath.

On constitutional matters, Senator Awan asserted that any attempt to alter the 18th Constitutional Amendment is unacceptable, as it was established with national consensus.

Senator Palwasha Khan commented on the events of May 9, 2023, describing them as an incitement to mutiny within the military. She reiterated the party’s condemnation and stressed the importance of accountability for those involved.

She also noted that President Asif Ali Zardari is the only civilian president to serve a second term, expressing confidence in his successful tenure completion.
