Pasban Democratic Party Calls for Treason Trials Over IPP Contracts Scandal

Karachi: Iqbal Hashmi, General Secretary of the Pasban Democratic Party, has demanded that cases of national treason be filed against those involved in the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) contracts, describing these agreements as a significant betrayal that has drained the national treasury.

According to Pasban Democratic Party, Hashmi criticized the IPPs deals as exploitative and a form of “economic slavery,” urging that all related contracts be scrutinized and those responsible, including former prime ministers and ministers, be held accountable. He advocated for the public disclosure of the identities of the owners of the power companies and called for their operations to be audited by a commission of citizens. Hashmi emphasized that these companies should only receive their contracted 15% profit, with any excess to be returned to the public through adjustments in electricity bills. Furthermore, he insisted on ending the ‘drama’ of capacity charges and withdrawing government guarantees due to irregularities.
