Pakistan Marks World Maritime Day with Focus on Safety and Environmental Sustainability

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari delivered a message on the occasion of World Maritime Day, emphasizing the 2024 theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First.” The theme focuses on enhancing maritime safety and security to support the continuous flow of international seaborne trade. The President highlighted the importance of integrating advanced technologies and proactive measures to improve shipping operations and protect the marine environment.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to maritime safety and ecological preservation. He outlined the nation’s involvement with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its adherence to international maritime safety and environmental standards. Pakistan has ratified several IMO Conventions, including the Hong Kong Convention for the recycling of ships, which reflects its dedication to maritime safety and environmental sustainability.

The President also stressed the critical role of regulatory measures, waste management improvements, and community initiatives in combating marine pollution. He called for enhanced cooperation between government entities, international bodies, NGOs, and local communities to mitigate environmental impacts on marine ecosystems. On World Maritime Day, President Zardari called for a collective reaffirmation to elevate safety standards, adopt eco-friendly practices, and support the welfare of seafarers, who play a vital role in global trade.
