Pakistan Government Supports Amicus Brief for Aafia Siddiqui’s Release

Islamabad: In a recent hearing at the Islamabad High Court, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan confirmed the government’s support for the amicus brief aimed at securing the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, indicating a significant step in the ongoing legal efforts surrounding her case.

According to Aafia Movement, the hearing, presided over by Justice Ejaz Ishaque Khan, involved discussions on the constitutional petition filed by Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui for her sister’s release. The Attorney General assured the court that barring unforeseen issues in the draft, the government would not only sign the amicus brief but also support the motion for compassionate release in the United States court.

Further details from the court proceedings reveal that the government is also planning a synchronous filing for clemency alongside Mr. Smith, who has been actively pushing for Dr. Siddiqui’s release. The government’s position reflects a cooperative stance on international legal efforts, aligning with upcoming diplomatic engagements in the U.S., including potential discussions at the UN or with the White House.

The involvement of various international legal and political figures in the campaign was noted, emphasizing a broad-based effort across multiple fronts to address not only the legal aspects but also the conditions of Dr. Siddiqui’s detention. The case is set to be relisted on October 18, 2024, as stakeholders continue to mobilize support and legal advocacy.
