NA-102 Election Results Highlight Disparity in Voter Representation

Faisalabad: The Member of the National Assembly from NA-102 Faisalabad-VIII was elected with 132,553 votes during the General Elections 2024, securing 50 percent of the ballots cast. However, this figure amounts to only 24 percent of the total registered voters in the constituency.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency indicated a voter turnout of 49 percent. NA-102 was one of 70 out of 266 National Assembly constituencies where the winner managed to secure 50 percent or more of the polled votes. Nevertheless, 127,144 voters, equating to 48 percent, did not support the winning candidate. Consequently, the winner's share among the total registered voters stood at just 24 percent.

The runner-up in the election obtained 38 percent of the votes cast, while the third-placed candidate received four percent. The remaining candidates collectively garnered seven percent of the votes. Additionally, 5,076 ballots, or two percent of the total, were declared invalid.

This analysis forms part of FAFEN's constituency-wise examination of the unrepresentativeness of Pakistan's electoral outcomes. The series underscores how the First-Past-The-Post system can distort representation in multi-candidate contests, where three or more contenders frequently compete. Such scenarios may result in a significant portion of the electorate feeling unrepresented, raising questions about legitimacy and possibly contributing to political instability.
