Karachi: In a thrilling final match at the Dr. Shah’s Five-A-Side Hockey Tournament, the Lionesses of the Field claimed victory over the Pearl Pioneers with a score of 5-3. The event, held at the Olympian Hanif Khan and Dr. Junaid Ali Shah Sports Complex, was organized by the KHA Women’s Wing in collaboration with the Karachi Hockey Association.
The closing ceremony saw Dr. Syed Imran Ali Shah as the chief guest, who distributed prizes to the winning and runner-up teams. Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Sindh, Abdul Aleem Lashari, presided over the ceremony.
Dr. Syed Imran Ali Shah expressed his admiration for the female athletes, noting the significant progress women have made in sports. He emphasized his ongoing support for women’s hockey and acknowledged the pivotal role his brother, Dr. Junaid Ali Shah, played in reviving the sport by installing Astro Turf at the complex.
Abdul Aleem Lashari affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Karachi Hockey Association and highlighted the increasing interest among young girls in the sport. He assured attendees that the under-construction hostel for KHA would be completed on schedule.
Imtiaz Ali Shah, President of the Karachi Hockey Association, praised the efforts of Dr. Junaid Ali Shah in revitalizing hockey in Karachi. He noted that the KHA ground’s transformation from a state of neglect to a vibrant hub of activity was largely due to his dedication.
KHA Women’s Wing President Asma Ali Shah highlighted the importance of providing a strong platform for women hockey players. She expressed confidence in Karachi’s future success under the leadership of Syed Imtiaz Ali Shah and mentioned the hostel as a valuable asset for female athletes.
Several prominent figures in the hockey community, including former national players and coaches, attended the event. The Best Emerging Players awards were given to Samina Tabassum, Nida Anjum, Mah Noor, Rija Moiz, Humna Nadeem, Iman, and Gulnaz Ghulam Nabi, recognizing their promising talent in the field.
