Habib University Hosts Premiere of Documentary on Islamic Philanthropy in Education

Karachi, Habib University, in a significant event at the residence of Mr. Arif Habib, showcased the premiere of “The Gift of Knowledge: Empowering through Islamic Philanthropy,” a documentary underscoring the role of Islamic giving in the advancement of higher education. The gathering, held on February 18, 2024, witnessed the participation of Pakistan’s prominent philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders, rallying support for the transformative power of religious giving in education.

According to Habib University, the event featured a recitation of the Holy Qur’an, followed by insights from Arif Habib on the pivotal role of Zakat in societal balance and equal opportunities. Lubna Ahmed, Director of Resource Development at Habib University, highlighted the university’s commitment to providing need-blind access to quality education, supported by the Islamic tradition of generosity, including Zakat and Awqaf.

The documentary illustrated Islam’s rich legacy of fostering education and intellectual growth through charitable practices, with Habib University President Wasif Rizvi elaborating on how Zakat and Waqf historically propelled the establishment of enlightened intellectual societies. The film aimed to rekindle the spirit of Islamic philanthropy in modern contexts, showcasing its potential to nurture talent and promote scientific and economic advancements.

Prominent figures, including Amir Paracha, CEO of Unilever Pakistan Limited; Tariq Rafi, Chairman of Siddiqsons Group; and Yousaf Hussain, President and CEO of Faysal Bank, expressed their support for Habib University’s mission of making world-class education accessible to all Pakistani youth, regardless of their financial background.

The event concluded with remarks from Rafiq M. Habib, Chancellor of Habib University, who called for the reimagining of religious philanthropy to build robust educational institutions.
