Karachi, At a seminar held at Dow University of Health Sciences, diabetes experts emphasized the critical need for proper care and medication management for the 33 million diabetic patients in Pakistan during Ramadan. They noted that, with appropriate medical guidance, fasting for more than 15 days could be achievable for those with the condition. The event, organized by the National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (NIDE) at the Ojha campus, aimed to provide crucial advice to diabetic patients planning to fast during the holy month. Esteemed speakers, including Prof. Zaman Sheikh, Prof. Iftikhar Ahmed, Prof. Akhtar Ali Baloch, and others, shared insights on managing diabetes effectively during Ramadan.
According to Dow University of Health Sciences, the seminar, part of an annual awareness initiative running for the last five years, featured discussions on the importance of early consultation with healthcare providers. Prof. Akhtar Ali Baloch, Director of NIDE, highlighted that among the 15 million Muslims worldwide suffering from diabetes, approximately five million observe fasting during Ramadan. He stressed the necessity of controlling sugar levels to avoid complications such as hypoglycemia and dehydration, which can be exacerbated by fasting. The speakers advised diabetic patients to undergo necessary diagnostic tests and check-ups before Ramadan, adjust medication dosages and timings, and maintain a balanced diet to manage their condition effectively.
Nutritionist Dr. Summaiya recommended dividing meals into two smaller and one larger portion during Ramadan to help manage diabetes. The importance of regular sugar level monitoring, especially in the initial days of fasting, was underscored to prevent any adverse effects. The seminar also touched upon the spiritual benefits of fasting for diabetic patients, suggesting that it could help eliminate wastes that contribute to sugar levels.
The session concluded with the distribution of shields to guest speakers and individuals who have shown outstanding performance in NIDE, marking the seminar’s success in raising awareness about diabetes management during Ramadan. This initiative reflects Dow University’s commitment to the health and well-being of diabetic patients, offering both medical and spiritual guidance to navigate the challenges of fasting with diabetes.
