Challenges to Information Access in Kashmir: Implications for Democracy and Human Rights

Srinagar: In Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the battle for access to information continues to intensify, affecting the democratic and human rights of the local population. The abrogation of Article 370 and 35A has further restricted access to information, with repeated internet disruptions posing significant challenges.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the situation in Kashmir remains dire as mainstream media often fails to capture the full scope of the conflict, pushing locals towards social media platforms for unfiltered information. These platforms, however, have faced increased restrictions since the legal changes in 2019. This has severely hampered the ability of Kashmiris to communicate, stay informed, and engage in socio-economic activities. The Vienna Declaration underscores the importance of the right to seek, receive, and impart information, highlighting its critical role in upholding human dignity and democracy. In Kashmir, frequent internet blackouts disrupt daily life and have profound implications on access to essential services and economic opportunities.

Social media, despite its limitations, serves as a lifeline for many in Kashmir, providing a space to share experiences and mobilize. Yet, the effectiveness of these platforms is continuously undermined by government-imposed internet blackouts, particularly during periods of political unrest. These disruptions not only stifle freedom of expression but also prevent journalists from documenting human rights abuses, further obscuring the reality of the situation from the global community.

The need for accurate information is critical in understanding and resolving the complex issues facing Kashmir. As restrictions continue, the international community’s role becomes ever more crucial in advocating for the rights of Kashmiris to access information and freely express themselves.
