Islamabad: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has called for a deepening of Pakistan's partnership with Canada through parliamentary diplomacy, expanded trade, and enhanced people-to-people engagement. The call was made during a reception in honor of Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Anita Anand, marking her first official visit to Pakistan.

According to Senate of Pakistan, Chairman Gilani extended greetings on behalf of the Senate, the Parliament, and the people of Pakistan, highlighting the nearly eight decades of cordial relations between the two countries. He emphasized the mutual respect, shared interests, and expanding economic cooperation that have characterized Pakistan-Canada relations, while also acknowledging the contributions of the Pakistani diaspora in Canada.

Chairman Gilani emphasized the importance of bilateral trade, describing it as the cornerstone of relations between the two nations. He noted Canada's role as a key supplier of agricultural commodities to Pakistan, which supports the country's food security and industrial growth. He also commended Minister Anand's discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar in Ottawa, which have further strengthened trade relations, as evidenced by the arrival of the first shipment of Canadian canola at Karachi Port.

In his address, Chairman Gilani underscored the significance of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering dialogue and mutual understanding. He invited Canada to actively participate in the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers' Conference, expressing confidence that stronger parliamentary engagement would address common global challenges.

The Chairman also pointed out the untapped potential for collaboration in various sectors such as energy, clean technology, mining, and information technology, citing Canada's technological expertise and Pakistan's strategic location and consumer market as key factors for successful partnerships.

Concluding his remarks, Chairman Gilani expressed optimism about the future of Pakistan-Canada relations, quoting former Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson on the importance of understanding among peoples for lasting peace. He reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to strengthening ties with Canada, envisioning a flourishing bilateral relationship in the years ahead.
