Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Leads Strategic Engagements in Brussels Amid Rising Tensions with India

Brussels: A high-level parliamentary delegation from Pakistan, led by former Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, began strategic discussions in Brussels, focusing on regional security and rising tensions with India. The visit is part of Pakistan’s effort to present its viewpoint on the deteriorating security situation in South Asia and address India’s recent actions, including its suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.

During their initial meetings, the delegation engaged with Bernd Lange, Chair of the Committee on International Trade at the European Parliament. Bhutto Zardari briefed Lange on the security challenges in the region and the potential impact on regional trade. Discussions also included Pakistan’s engagement under the GSP+ framework, with an emphasis on maintaining trade cooperation despite external pressures.

The delegation also met with Birgit Stevens, Director General for Bilateral Affairs at the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The discussions revolved around strengthening bilateral ties and coordinating on peace and security issues in multilateral forums. Both parties underscored the importance of upholding international law in South Asia.

At the Belgian Parliament, the Pakistani delegation met with senior legislators, including Kathleen Depoorter and Franky Demon. The delegation addressed concerns over India’s military actions and cross-border activities, stressing Pakistan’s commitment to countering terrorism and advocating for a rules-based international system.

The day concluded with a policy roundtable at the Egmont – Royal Institute for International Relations. Bhutto Zardari delivered a keynote address, highlighting the risks posed by India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and the broader implications for global treaty regimes.

Throughout the engagements, Pakistan’s delegation emphasized a commitment to peaceful dispute resolution in line with international law and UN Security Council resolutions. The meetings aimed to solidify Pakistan’s diplomatic stance amid escalating regional tensions.

The delegation includes Dr. Musadik Masood Malik, Senator Sherry Rehman, Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, Engr. Khurram Dastgir Khan, Senator Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari, and former Foreign Secretaries Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani and Ambassador Tehmina Janjua.
